TOPIC: Who made this boat???

Who made this boat??? 10 years 6 months ago #91804

Hello All

I am new to this. I have wanted a Herter's Flying Fish for some time now. What very few I have come across are quite pricy. I found this 1956 (???) 14 foot Fiberglass winged boat. It has a 16" transom, rated for a 65hp motor. It has a walk thru front seat and a fiberglass transom splash well. The bottom has a half round channel running down the middle to drain it, like Herters used on all its glass boats. It does have a drain plug that looks like it is original. I can't find any name or numbers on it except the hp, weight plate. Any info is appreciated.

I hope my pics turn out.

Welcome Bruce, It looks like a Tomahawk Skimate to me. Here is a like to the glassic library www.fiberglassics.com/library/Tomahawk

Thanks Mark. This is new terrain for me. I have restored a couple of wood boats and I like working on the old outboards. I once had a 1974 Sidewinder that the transom got soft, and I let it go (wish now that I hadn't).

Thank you Jetflite. After checking, it could be a 1959. I am surprised that there is no trace of paint on the inside. Do you know if Tomahawk used ID plates?

I have to assume it had a wooden floor over the fiberglass stringers. I would like to see a pic of one with the correct interior.

Yes Tomahawk did use ID plates. Could never make any sense of the numbering system however.

Greg, Nice Boat!!! It looks like you have done exactly what I would like to do. What did you use for the floor?

1/2" 7 ply exterior grade plywood at $49.00/sheet. Need three sheets.

Have a look at this, might be able to save you some time!

Bruce you should be aware your boat never had a floor. My boat shown in the included photos did have a factory floor. You sure could install a floor if you wanted to. You would however lose about 3" of seat base height pushing your knees a little high as you set in the seat.

Greg
I have a lot to learn. Your pics are most helpful. I am not sure what is missing on my boat behind the front seats, and I am surprised that there is no paint on the inside, and the transom splash well. You really did a nice job on yours. Thanks for the help.
