TOPIC: re-creation of Brooks Stevens prototype

re-creation of Brooks Stevens prototype 10 years 6 months ago #91784

They say that two prototypes were built, and then there was a similar series built that is somewhat different. This is a re-creation of the prototype, not the production boat.

It is not my place to say, but I will say that there will be changes. ACBS has 56 chapters and an International headquarters and around 8,000 members. Such a big organization can not turn on a dime.

All of my friends at FiberGlassics will not be able to adjust as fast as a single person could, either.

Yes, more photos. About 400. I'll take a year to post them all. Sorry.

Hello All,

Just got my boots on the ground and have lots to share.

Shannon took home a trophy for her absolutely flawless Evinrude Lark re-creation.

The Cadillac Sea Lark was based on Brooks Stevens design for Evinrude. Only two Evinrude Larks were built and were shown at the 1956 Chicago and New York boat shows. Their whereabouts is now an unknown.

Following pictures are courtesy of the Milwaukee Art Museum, Brooks Stevens archives.

Just curious if anyone else has problems with this link to Kev Fins Boats in the Belfry site. My machine says site not available.

Thanks,
Terry

Some of that boat is chrome finish on plastic, I hear.

Hello all,

Gary told me that trim piece is actually FG that is painted chrome. And again with flawless results.
I asked the question because my first thought it was vacuum plating on a composite.

Now the fins on Shannon’s boat are fabricated of aluminum whereas the original Evinrude Lark design was stainless steel. Brooks Stevens even incorporated retractable ski tow lines inside the fins.

The photo I posted earlier of Kev Fins Cadillac Sea Lark re-creation has FG fins that are copies of the original glass fins on his Cadillac Sea Lark . I also heard Kev Fin provided one of those FG copies to be used as a model for the fabrication of the aluminum fins on Shannon's boat.

Thanks to Terry for posting the pictures and to everyone for the nice comments.

We will be showing the boat at the Keels & Wheels Concours d'Elegance in Seabrook, TX (near Houston) May 3-4, at the ACBS show in St. Michaels, MD June 13-15, and at the Clayton Antique boat show in upstate NY the first weekend in August, so if anyone can make it to any of those show, please stop by and say hi.

Steve--we definitely plan a swing up your way at some point, but right now I'm not sure when.

Chris--Thank you for the kind offer. I will keep your number and call if we end up needing some help. One thing I know we're looking for is a place to put our toyhauler, which we well be staying in while attending the show. Right now, the closest one I've found is Tuckahoe State Park, but if you know of anything closer, please let me know.

Thanks,

Shannon in Crystal River

Yes, I know the place, but I can not say it in public. Call me, 518-281-0045, Chris Brown, and after we talk you will understand. It is the right deal.

If you can make it to the Buffalo Show, (first weekend after Labor Day), we may be able to help with travel expenses and would love to have you at the show.

The Buffalo show is one of the top shows in the country, generally second only to the Taveras Show in size.
