ed gordon and i went halves on a checkmate boat,its heavy metal flake blue and silver,we are going to pick it up on sunday pics then,its gelcoat and paint are good,just needs new clearcoat.
the guages and complete dash plate,and steering wheel are there and look great,the interior is gone,but the back seat,it needs a trailer and motor yet.
we are talking about either selling it as is or restoring it?
i dont know if i have another restore in me anymore,probably not,lol.john

Go for it John!, I came close several years to getting a checkmate at an auction but the price got too steep.
Restore, it's the only option for you. Been a long time since we've seen your fantastic work.

I swear the Shell Lake I'm doing now is my last!!! The old bones are having a hard time bending over and crawling under the dash. But...I keep looking at other projects for some strange reason that just beg to be taken on. It's the disease we have.

I give u guys a lot of credit when it comes to those "smaller boats" Its the riding in them that hurts just as much or more, than working on them. They (under 21Ft) just aren't enjoyable anyway or anyhow anymore. John, if u guys can make some doe on the thing, take your Lasik(furosemide) that's a water pill for all u folks that don't have congestive heart failure, get her done and buy a turn key 25 footer and Enjoy Life on the water!!!!!!!! a nice cabin, a crapper, a fridge, and a good woman or a good dog or both!!!!
when it comes to Checkmate I have driven and raced against many. They are very well built boats with a nice riding hull design(Idont know about the ride on the small guys) but I can tell u that the 21 and 23 gave my Carlson CV 23 a run for its money (they lost, plus my 120ft rooster even gave the Pope a hard on!)
cant wait to see some pics, wondering is it red, white, yellow, or blue. and oh they can handle power so some is good more is better .....to much is JUST RITE.

16.5 ft, 875 lbs, 150hp rating. boatspecs.iboats.com/Checkmate_Boats__Diplomat__1981/bp/66b18019 70hp should get almost 40 mph, 150hp is good for 60+ stock. 85-115hp will make a nice family friendly setup. Pick your joy factor. Well built, hand laid glass, sharp paint. I still remember my early '70s 14' Checkmate. P.O. couldn't yank 2 skiers out quick enough with the original 60hp, so he hung a 1972 125hp Evinrude on it(!) In ski trim with a 21 pitch aluminum prop it would run 58mph, and didn't like wakes, as in it pointed its nose skyward rather easily. Still regret selling it.

it has some very minor gel coat cracks and i think someone just threw on some clear coat,i was able to get most of it off at a car wash on the way home.the metal flake looks good underneath .
