TOPIC: Re:What is the best motor?

Re:What is the best motor? 10 years 7 months ago #89665

Homelite made a four stroke back in the day called a Bearcat 55. That might be an option, if you can find one.
About the modern four strokes with carburetors having problems. My father has a 2001 merc 75 four stroke, and he has a lot of problems with his carbs plugging up. Mainly because he doesn't use it enough and its so good on gas ( at slower speeds ) that the gas will go bad before he has a chance to use it up. The new gas now a days only lasts a couple weeks before it starts to deteriorate.

I've noticed the problem with gas in my Honda generator. I live in Vegas where it is often over 110 outside but much higher in the garage. I am forever cleaning out the carb on that darned thing.

Alcohol Free (Non-Oxygenated?) gas and fuel stabilizer is the best remedy IMHO. It's "pay me now or pay me later" like the old TV commercial used to say. Just my two cents......

But where do you find alcohol free fuel?

I know by me there are a few stations with no ethanol in the premium grades.

Don't know how reliable this is but...there's nothing listed near me.

When done boating you remove the fuel line and let it run till it quits !!
That is the easiest cheapest way to keep carburetors clean.

Living here in Michigan, I have a few seasonal gas powered tools, lawnmower, rider, weedwacker, leaf blower, 2 snowblowers, plus my outboard collection. I feed these from a 5 gallon gas can. When I fill it, I add a bit of Seafoam to the tank. In the past 7-8 years I have had one fuel line issue that was my fault, not the fuel's. I have not changed any fuel lines due to alcohol. A couple times I have stored them "wet" and had no problems starting them after months of sitting in the shed. Is the Seafoam countering the alcohol? I don't know. But as long as it keeps working, I'm sold.

Every time I run my motors till they dies after removing the fuel line, while I am working on them I have found that the bowl is still about 1/2 full, (or 1/2 empty depending on how you look at life) My champions have a bowl drain that I do like.

However I have stopped running my carbs "dry" because with the bit of fuel that remains you have wave action while trailering the boat home, and I feel that this action is wearing the seat out on the float valve.

I have had a brass float on one of the Champions I got that had a hole in the bottom from bounding up and down while on the back of the boat on the trailer.
