TOPIC: I may have finally found a Cutter Jet De Ville

I may have finally found a Cutter Jet De Ville 10 years 11 months ago #85694

I've been looking a long time, but I finally found one ( By Accident ) and am trying to negotiate purchase. Any other Cutter guys out there, I sure would like to hear your restoration stories.

Sooooooooooooooooo how big an outboard can you hang off one of these? Keeping vintage correct of course.

Bigger and faster isn't always better, performance can depend on hull design and motor weight.

Well the Jet DeVille is listed from '58 to '60; Max HP rating increased from 60 to 70 HP for '59-'60, with only a change in weight, not dimensions? The different length for '60 is probably a change in measuring (along the gunwales rather than centerline).

Biggest HP you can get and stay period correct would be a '60 Evinrude/Johnson 75 HP; 1958 to 1960 Mercury 75/78/78A/700/800 60 to 80 HP; 1958 to 1960 Scott Flying Scott 60 HP. Of course you can venture in either direction a year or two, or employ other tactics like switching motor covers, wraps, faceplates, etc.

Looks like the 1960 Evinrude Lark 40 HP was on there a long time - might be simplest just to upgrade to a 1960 Evinrude 75 HP and keep the same throttle/shift controls and look (but would need a different wiring harness).

That 40 should push her along nicely.

I'm curious to see what happens with cleaning up the top, how blue it becomes again.

That will be one heck of a combo. I'm sure you will post finished photos of the two together when the boat is done. Congratulations on the boat. And I love the car!

Not knowing how to read the ID tag, I'm guessing that the 60 in the sequence means that it is a 1960.

That would be it! And yes, you're correct, it's a 1960. I have a bunch of Cutter hull numbers saved at home, so I'll have to check to see how yours fits in. I know they changed the pattern for the first and third sections at one point in 1960, so I don't remember where your sequence number is. The B throws me.

I only have two boats from 1960, and both were later. I'm pretty sure this later designation meant those were built in May and June of 1960, and yours was built in January 1960.

That said, your boat is a 100 series model, which I think is the Jet Deville. The 110 series is the Como, which are both the '60s I have recorded.

The only thing I can think of is the B was for something special, like a show boat. The other Comos had numbers in the 1700s at the end.

This one did come with the canopy top. The original owner contacted me and told me they found it. I'm picking it up along with the title tomorrow. I wonder if the B is for the top option?

The "B" might mean "Bimini Top." I guess I was right in my original "SWAG" of your ID.

Did they call them "Bimini Tops" back in the day?
