I'm new to boating in general.
I recently replace my 1963, 40 hp Johnson
with a 1965, 60 hp Johnson. It came
with 2 props. I opted for the smaller one
because the larger one has a nasty chip in it.
I only use this boat for putting around, I'm
not pulling skiers or anything. However it
seems to run pretty high RPMs for the speed
I'm achieving. I want to buy a new prop but
I don't know anything about how pitch
affects the perfprmance as well as size or
even how to measure a prop for that matter.
By the way, It's a fiberglass, 1963, 14 ft.
Renken. Thanks in advance.

Do not use the chipped prop. It will ruin your outboard's gears.

To figure out what pitch prop is needed you need a tach hooked up to the engine. Then you need to know the max rated rpms for the motor is. Example, you are running a 13" Prop while taching out at 5 G and your motor is rated at 4500 you are under pitched. The next step would be to put a 15" on,that will drop your rpms by 4-500 and put you with in the recommended range, while increasing your speed and performance as well. You do not want the motor to lug or over rev.

There was a special small hub prop for the early V-4 motors.----It was meant for larger boats / heavy loads.
Your set-up will likely need a 12 " pitch.----The standard gearcase really spun the prop at high revs , not likely that you can spin a 15" prop on that.
