Got Email from Humber Boat company and they said it was not a Jewel. In the late sixties early seventies they say up here in Ontario Canada boat companies would spring up make a couple hulls and then disappear. Is there any way to search these old companies ?

Neat boat, sorry we can't be of more help. Best thing to do is post photos everywhere you can on the 'net. I suggest the forum at Scream and Fly- lots of knowledgeable and long-time outboard boat racers there who may recognize your go-fast boat:

I have been working on this hull as much as I could with the cold winter we have had. Now its time to kick it in gear. I have been grinding the bottom and have removed all old repairs stress cracks and any thing else I found wrong , my question is what is the best to use to fill stress crack areas I will be using epoxy resin.
1. Should I use fibre glass mat to fix stress crack areas or can I mix 1/4 milled fiber and spread in low areas and
2. Seeing that I have sanded the hole bottom with a 40 grit paper can I put one to two layers of thin 7781 glass with epoxy over the hole bottom , will it stick to the old gell coat.
Heres some pictures

Great to see your making progress. I know the glass will stick to what you've ground down but not sure if it will stick to the gelcoat. i would assume it should but other's much smarter than i when it comes to glass repair will pipe up.

Looks like you're making some great progress there, are you sick of sanding yet? LOL

1. Unless you've got some severe damage we're not seeing here, I'd stick with milled fiber and resin to fill damaged areas. Follow up with some quality marine glazing putty for the final smooth finish.
2. As stated in #1, I'd avoid adding extra layers to the outside if it were me. (I did add some layers of heavy biaxial to the inside of my hull, laid in between and over the stingers.)

You mentioned using epoxy resin, so you'll want to check with the mfg'r. to make sure you don't have compatibility issues with your choice of re-finish materials (paint, gel coat, etc.).

I'm no expert, just sharing what I've learned from those who are around here. Hope this helps, just my two cents worth........ ;)

Thanks for the advice , but tonight they are calling for snow so every thing is on hold for a few days . I think I might try a test piece of glass and resin on the gell coat to see how well it sticks.

the glass should stick just fine, if you sand it first to get a ruff finish, the gel coat stuck to the glass on the other side. just my 2 cents. frog

I may be wrong but if I remember right you use vinylester (sp) if your going to gelcoat but if you use epoxy you'll have to use paint as the gelcoat won't stick to epoxy resin.

The plan is to use epoxy paint , specifically Awlgrip epoxy paint . I have gotten a few gallons of slightly expired aircraft paint and primers from work, just need to by hardner.

Re:Need to identify my winter project 10 years 5 months ago #92611

hodgify,

Since you're going to use epoxy paint, I'd also use epoxy resin/hardner, thickened with agricultural/pulverized (from the farm supply store) to "whipped cream consistency" & "peanut butter" for everything else.
(One pound of lime will last you a LONG time as a thickener, works GREAT & it's CHEAP. =====> I LIKE CHEAP.)

got all the bad spots filled with a mixture of milled glass and carbon fibre , a few spots I used some mat because they were fairly big spots, a little harder to soak the epoxy through the mat but looks ok.

Spent all last week sanding the bottom of the hull and transom , sprayed a guide coat of flat black paint and then used a long board sander to get it all straight , should be smoother than when it was new. If anybody new looking can identify hull let me know?

Hi,
Certainly an interesting hull, and your work appears to be really nice. As I am curious, what outboard do you plan to install?

Joe

Hi,
Thank You for sharing, and I too appreciate the jack plate. What are you doing for a propeller if you are mounting (the outboard) pretty high? We recently added these 4-blade aluminum propellers, but it would be costly to mail to Canada.

Joe

I do plan on using a four blade prop . For this year I will probably just experiment with three blades. Seeing that nobody knows anything about this hull everything I do is an experiment. No plan to jack the motor until I see how it goes. This is going to be my play toy at the cottage as I have a small 15ft bass boat and a 14ft aluminum with 15hp for fishing .

Hi Surferjunkie sorry I have been up north to open cottage ,just got home. Great looking boat ,almost looks like a glasspar G3 . You should start a new thread , I am sure there is somebody here that will recognize it . But as every body here says more pictures would be nice. Good luck with the rebuild.

Well using my $12.00 Harbour Frieght spray gun I was able to get 3 good coats of awlgrip poly down . Have not sprayed any thing big in 10 years so I think it looks pretty good. Only problem is either I have alittle fish eye or solvent pop ,good thing its the bottom and nobody will see it.

sanded the top deck with 40grit paper and spread a coat of a mixture of epoxy carbon and glass milled fibers thickened up with cabosil and spread out to cover all the cracking in the gell coat . Will smooth out and apply one layer of thin glass to make it strong enough to walk on.
