TOPIC: Electric Ignition Conversion Problem

Electric Ignition Conversion Problem 11 years 3 weeks ago #83611

Had a great time at the Buffalo Boat Show...even though it rained. Met some great people from FB! So, I was advised to change over my distributor to a electric ignition system. So today, I installed the Hot-Spark system and a new 3 ohm coil for my 1961 Volvo Penta BB70 engine. It turned over many times, but after a few revolutions, it would just give out a "spit". Can this engine be adjusted in the timing? is this something I have to do? Could it be another problem?

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the Hot Spark systems.
I did find this you might find helpful however;

got it running...had the distributor 180 Degrees backward. Runs, but very "chuggy". Will need to get a timing light but I think I can adjust it by the sound. What do you all think?

Many of the auto parts stores rent tools (like timing lights), I think I'd want it set to specs personally. You could probably get it close "tuning by ear", but too little timing will waste fuel and be short on power - to much could damage the engine with detonation. With the conversion kit you would only have to set it one time, should be good to go after that!

Just my two cents worth.....;)
