Good compression. Spark only on top cylinder.
If it drips on the Merc it goes back to the dumpster!!!!!!!!

Well I couldn't help myself!! It was just laying there on a bed of newspapers, banana peels and Keystone light cans. Poor little shaver!

Neil,

I bet that if you fell headfirst into the storm drain, you'd find a diamond. = CONGRADS.
(I once went to a garage sale late one Sunday afternoon & the man gave me TWO Wizard 6HP outboards. - BOTH ran fine with clean gas! = Never been that lucky since.)

That must be one heck of a dumpster!

The little JohnRude probably has dirty points, if you pull the flywheel and clean/gap 'em, I bet she'll spark like crazy!

The guys on the Craigslist really seem to like these for some reason, maybe 'cause they're low profile, or because of the folding tiller, who knows? If it runs well it's definitely a good seller.

Congrats.........ed

Hi guys, I'm new to the site and I hate to start with a "topper" story but I have pulled 4 outboards out of dumpsters! (It helps that I have worked in boatyards for the last 35 years as a yacht carpenter!) The first was a 6hp Johnson that fired up after cleaning the carb and points. I sold that with a small sailboat as an auxiliary engine. The second was a 2hp Cruise-and-carry to which added some pre-mix, started on the pier, (air-cooled) and sold it to sailor walking down the pier who offered $75! The third is a 3hp Mercury that looked almost brand new that was leaning to a dumpster with a note that read: "needs new carburetor, help yourself!" As a long time antique outboard collector I knew that unless they actually broke something vital, they never need a carb, just a good cleaning! This I did and it has run great ever since. That last, an acquaintance actually pulled out, kept for a year or two, and eventually gave to me. I found I knew the fellow who tossed it in (a local yacht broker) who told me it ran fine but was replaced by a new 4-stroke Honda and threw away the Nissan ns40c because it was a bit shabby looking! It came with controls and all I needed was new (longer) control cables and a new prop. This engine is now on my '61 14' Alumacraft Torino (fiberglass) that I have just finished restoring. I have only had the boat out once on a test run and it ran pretty well. Great at top end, but I still need to sort out an idle issue. (Cleaned the carb and pulled the flywheel to clean and set the points only to discover electronic ignition- no points!)

Thanks,

Boy Capt. did you stumble on a bunch of salty dogs. Welcome aboard, salute the Ensign and receive permission. Sounds like you have the expertise we all need here.

Rustydusty,

It must be "NICE" to be rich. = I had a friend in Galveston, who was once in the OB biz; one of his customers from Houston replaced a year-old 90HP Honda because it was "just too dirty to be bothered with".- Tommy spent an hour or so doing a "general cleaning" & resold the 90 Honda for about 2/3 of the new cost that same day! = NOTHING mechanically wrong with the OB.

yours, satx
