TOPIC: engine stall problem

engine stall problem 11 years 1 month ago #83068

was out on the lake at the beginning of the season and then yesterday. (have a 10 week old son, so didn't get out much this year.) At low RPMs it does just fine, but when I get up to plane, it cuts out or "hiccups". Thought it was a fuel problem, so I changed part of the lines, but am still having the same problem. Could it be electrical? Would changing the plug wires be a solution? My engine is a '61 Volvo Penta BB70. The oil pressure seems fine. I think it only happens when the outdrive is engaged. I don't like to run the outdrive out of the water, but i may try it this morning. Well, anyone have ideas?

That is a rare(?) motor is it not?

If it is that old and all the fuel lines haven't been changed, it is time.

I have a 1962 Volvo Penta B18 AQ100 engine and had a similar problem. I took out the old fuel pump and replaced with a electric and a fuel pressure selector and gauge. Probable could have just replaced the old mechanical pump but this worked well and they were parts I had laying around the shop..

I once had a similar problem and the cause turned out to be mud dobbers had plugged the fuel tank vent. I discovered it when I left the fill cap off and it suddenly ran great. Worth checking?

Aha! I cleaned the carb and then the fuel filter. After this, I checked the electrical wiring, and what do you know...the nut on top of the ignition coil was very loose. Tightened it up and took the boat out on Lake Chautauqua where we are vacationing right now. Spent over an hour cruising without one incident!!! Looking forward to the show in Long Island on Saturday! Thanks for the help guys!
