You might try these guys ( stores.ebay.com/Sea-Way-Marine ). I bought a tach from them for my 1967 Merc 500 thunderbolt which takes a special tach because of the electronic ignition. They were very knowledgeable and have a lot of old stock. Not cheap, but the tach they sold me is (NOS) new old stock and works perfectly.

Hope that helps,
Bill

I had the same problem your having tying to find a airguide tach to work with my battery ignition merc. I ended up giving up and using a Aqua Meter tach I found on ebay for points ignition that works great. It doesn't match the speedometer but at least I know what my motor is doing now.

Your motor is a 6 cylinder right. If it is you need a airguide 651 which I have.

Re:still lookin for a tach... 11 years 1 month ago #82188

I believe this is the tach you are looking for. I will sell it to you as long as my other airguide tach works with my motor Im going to install on my glasspar. I should know by the end of next week.

Hey, if your tach deal doesn't work out, you can use an automotive-style tach.

Just take a tach-input signal off of one coil only, and set the tach for 6-cylinder.

Since each coil of the Merc dual-point ign runs 3 cylinders, with a 2-stroke you'll get the same power pulses as a 4-stroke 6-cylinder.

Years ago my good skiing buddy put a car tach on his old 90hp V4 Evinrude, on the V8 setting it worked perfectly.

Good info here guys. Ron don't want to steal your thread but I have a question then.

If I use this meter to test my '67 80 HP V4 should it be on 4 cyl or 8 then?

i never used it because i have battery ignition. i thot a tach was a tach. not so, theres battery ignition, magneto, and cdi, and a tach for each. when i bought it off ebay it didn't specify what ignition it was for and the seller didn't know. so i took a chance. ron

Re:still lookin for a tach... 11 years 1 month ago #82260

Let me know if doesn't work out. Buried in my "stuff" somewhere is a box of various airguide gauges. I'll need for 2) 40 hp gales, or at most V4 75, both of which, I think, Are magneto, so may have. Just may take a while to locate...

Looks like a good ol' automotive dwell-tach, and you should switch to the 8-cylinder setting; a 4-cylinder 2-stroke will have the same power-pulses as an 8-cylinder 4-stroke.

I haven't forgot about you. I should have the motor on the glasspar by Wednesday. Then I'll know if I need the tach or not. I did want to mention that the tach is a flush mount unlike your clock and barometer.

Ron,

Go to classicboatwork.com. They have an Airguide 651B for sale that looks in great shape, but doesn't have the transmitter. You could get that plus the transmitter from the 651A (A is flush mount and B is surface mount) and you might be in business.
