Ok so I thought I would post this in the main forum so I can get a general opinion from everyone. I don't believe Evinrude put this in from the factory and I know Mercury did have a sound deadening type insulation on it's wraps. here is what was in the cover of my 80 hp.

Do you think I can use that double sided foil insulation that you can around water heaters and ducting? It's actually only about maybe a quarter inch thick. Do you think it would work on the '61 800 Merc wrap I have?

Why wouldn't 3/4" thick foam rubber from an upholstery shop work?

Hmmm, well I'll be darned, didn't figure it to be factory. I just figured the foiled stuff might last longer but if that foam is factory than it lasted pretty darned long so I guess it wouldn't hurt to use the same thing again. I know the Merc stuff has a kind of plastic over it's foam, almost like a plastic baggie with foam packed into it. I'm thinking that foil stuff might be better for the Merc wrap.

This subject came up a while back Bob, I believe someone expressed concern that the foil-faced stuff might hold too much heat inside endangering some of the electrical components. The hood/top cowl of my OMC had the same stuff you and Jim are showing, but it had deteriorated to the point it was "powdering" all over the motor so I removed it. I haven't replaced it yet, kinda getting used to hearing the old girl growl back there. ;)

Thanks Mark, didn't remember that thread but I was wondering in the back of my head, if it would hold in too much heat. Don't get me wrong, i love the sound of this and the Fat Fifty but the folks who have to ride in the back would like to talk at maybe just a raised voice rather than having to almost shout. ;)

I have the same dilemma with my hydrodyne hood. It used to have fiberglass insulation that was foiled under the cowling and in the front. I am confident it needs something, because she is loud! I think I might try the water heater stuff. What do you think?

Thanks John, don't sweat it I think the foam is pretty cheap and I can get it from Johann's Fabric I think. If I can't I'l let you know buddy.

Wentworthto1 I think go for it since your original had foil coated then the water heater stuff should work just fine. of course that's just my opinion .

I used an old wet suit for the insulation inside the hood of my '57 Evinrude 35hp. It did make a difference.
