TOPIC: How do you know what HP Kicker motor to get?

How do you know what HP Kicker motor to get? 11 years 2 months ago #80030

Im thinking that I want to pick up a kicker motor for the 22'Bell Boy but was wondering what Horsepower to look for? The mount already installed on the boat says not to exceed 15 HP... The boat will be used mostly in the San Diego Bay and in the open water. Any guidance in motor size would be appreciated.

22' and operating in the big water 15hp sounds prudent

I agree, My '63 17' Seafair when done will get a 15hp even thought was told a 9.9 would be just as good, (I went over this alot with the guys on aomci forum) which ever comes my way cheapest. Your not going to plane the hull anyway but want it to have enough torque/speed to get you back by dark imo. My bracket is rated for 10 or 12hp so should be ok for up to a 15. If ya find a older light weight 18hp cheap I wouldn't pass it up? swells and wind can hold ya back if to small thats why not going to use my 6hp. I was even told buy one guy last year to get a 20hp but think thats over kill and would be a tight fit with the fat 4 85hp rude.

ADDED: Thought we were talking Ocean? "[ The boat will be used mostly in the San Diego Bay and in the open water.]"

9.9 would work OK, as long as not out in the ocean. Got friends in SD, so I know the area. Heck, I have a 5hp Honda kicker on my 20 footer, and its fine. Just get a older Rude or Johnson 2 stroke. The 4 strokes are too damn heavy.
