It's a 1956 glass magic playmaster deluxe , with the original gelcoat and paint job.

Congratulations!! :-) Looks like a relatively easy restoration project.

The transom is bowed out (from a giant crappy 70's johnson that I declined to buy) and the drivers position was moved to the front seat.

The transom looks easy as heck to fix. It's literally two boards sandwiching a fiberglass core.

I'll reposition the driver seat , repaint the inside , shine up the original gelcoat , maybe some easy board and foam seats , should be a good survivor for cheap!

man something is very wrong when one of us goes out and finds something sitting on the side of the road, and drag it home and see a good looking boat in it, deep into it. man i can't talk, i did the same thing but i spent 200.00 on mine and yours looks new compared to mine. anybody can go out and buy a water ready boat, it takes someone very special to go buy a steering wheel and build a boat around it. my hat is off to you bud. gook luck and i know it will shine once more.

What would you guys recommend as a clear coat to go over the original paint?

The fiberglass restore stuff i normally use is getting stick between the cracks and is showing up bright white.

Some kind of clear coat I can slather on with a roller would be ideal.

Not only that , but it's also a wood transom with a fiberglass core. Instead of a wood core covered in fiberglass. Just cut two boards and screw them on , lol.

As it currently stands the boat contains no wood anymore. The stringers are hollow fiber glass. If I replaced the wood transom with metal the whole boat would be basically weatherproof.

I have noticed tho the fiberglass it a tad thinner then on the fleetforms. The fleetforms are built like tanks.

Beleive it or not , this boat is even smaller then the fleetforms.

Anyone got some input reguarding the paint?

I was attempting to shine up the original blue , but there are so many cracks the polish gets stuck in between.

I was cosidering either

A: pour some sort of clear resin on the boat.

B: repainting the boat and then using some sort of resin for the shine.

Do you have some close-up's? That may help. Mine was totally cracked to the fiberglass mat and I removed all the gel. It is a long hard process because mine was very thick. This was on an edge.

Seems to me that you would have to make that transom very heavy with that layered construction technique to get anywhere near the strength of one made of composit fiberglass over wood core. I can't read the engine limit rating on the photo, but I'll bet the original engine rating was for something like 18hp. Going up to a 40 or 50hp might be too much for that type of construction.

That technique looks too easy to be as good as the way all other boats are engineered.

Any composit/structural engineer types out there that might know more about this?

Hope you can solve the finish issues, but there again just putting clear over the cracks is probably not going to do the job. That will probably just amplify the problem. Though it is certainly worth a small test spot to see how it comes out.

My first look at this project said Oooo looks like an easy restore, but after looking more closely, it is probably more like the typical jobs we see. I just watched that film posted elsewhere here where the professional from Boatworks Today restored a GlassMaster and I realized that much of what I just did on my Sabre Craft will probably not last as I did not do it properly. For example, those pesky gel-coat cracks that I just filled and painted over will probably be back in short order. Oh well, live and learn.

Which ever way you go on these issues, you certainly have picked a cool looking boat project.

Good luck,
Bill

It is similar to your pictures in some areas. I honestly don't mind the cracks at all (actually I kinda like them). The basic color still looks fine and isn't faded anywhere , I just want it to be shiny , So I'm thinking a clear resin of some kind.

i would recomend sanding the old gelcoat or paint with 80 grit sandpaper and useing an thick epoxy primer on it use body filler where u need to then sand with fine sandpaper and repaint.would look and last alot longer.

Any updated pictures on your restore? Hows it going? I purchased a 56 Glass Magic Sportmaster and will slowly be working on it. I noticed the thin fiberglass on the hull as well. Have an easy lift (think thats what its called!) trailer, and when I have the front elevated when the sun is hitting it I can see light..blotchy but all over! The original hp for mine was 35, the lowest in the glass magic line that year. There are some old Glass Magic brochures from 56 on here, as well as some spec sheets if you have not found them already.

It actually still looks the same. Haven't touched it in a while. It's currently chillin in our barn so at least it's out of the elements but I've been building a few movie cars lately so my cheapo glassic project in on the back burner.
