TOPIC: 1971 Johnson 50HP

Please tell me if there is a port for the coolant water to spray out of. Usually outboards spray the water out the side to indicate the impeller/cooling system is working.
...also, does the motor charge the battery as its running?

I know My evinrude 85hp I had to tap into a crankcase plug with a small copper line and run it out the rear so I could see mine working....

I had a 40h.p. Johnson. The water on mine, sprayed out the exhaust. As far as the battery issue, mine had a flywheel with a slotted pulley on top for a generator belt that drives a generator. Mine didn't come with a generator. If yours comes with a charging system, then yes, it's supposed to charge the battery while it's running. If you have a multimeter, check the generator or charging system while the engine is running and see what the output is. I haven't checked mine yet, but, if it's anything like a car, the output should be about 14.2 - 14.6 volts. The V.R. will regulate the voltage so you don't overcharge your battery.

Your engine die not come with a telltale. The water will splatter out of the upper exhaust ports just below the bottom pan at the rear of the engine. More water will come out of these when the engine is fully warm and the thermostat open.

The engine does have an alternator under the flywheel it powers the ignition and charges the battery as well. I suggest that you get a manual for the engine if you are going to work on it.
