The fuel tank on my 68 MFG Chevron has gauge on the tank.
Is there a gauge i can put on the dash from that period? As you can see it just screws off. I was hoping to find something that would just screw on in place of the original for the sending unit, and a gauge for the dash to match the tach and speedo. .

You can have electric sending units made to your specs, the start around $200.00. Electrical sending units are rather fragle and would not last long in a portable tank. I would suggest going with a mounted tank that is made to accept an electrical sending unit. The gauge and sending unit you choose MUST be rated for the same OHMS to get accurate reading.

The tank is mounted. It's bolted to the floor under the starboard side seats and goes to a filler cap on the starboard side. I'll see if i can get a better picture of the entire tank.

You may need to modify the tank to keep price under control. Most new mounted tanks have a place to mount the sending unit.
Check out Summit Racing they have 258 sending units www.summitracing.com/search/department/gauges-accessories/part-type/fuel-tank-sending-units OR JAZ Products www.jazproducts.com/fuel_sendunit.html One of many that do custom sending units. www.wemausa.com/sensors/level-FuelWater.shtml#S5U Find a sending unit that matches the depth of your tank and matches the gauge for OHMs. Lots of companies make vintage look gauges if you decide to go with a new one. Summit has over 2,000 fuel gauges to look at, I like the Stewart Warner Green Line gauges.

Hi,
As suggested you can modify the fuel tank to accept a 5 screw sender, but I think that I would either modify the mounting flange of the new sender, or we have possibly the correct thread-on cap to which a new sender can be attached (see pictures). This thread-on cap is brass, and has an inside diameter of 1.9625 inches. The male threads of the fuel tank opening would be a little larger than this measurement I would think. Joe,
This is along the lines of what i was thinking. Something i could screw on to the old tank where the old mechanical gauge connected. I'll measure the threads and get back to you. Once i used that cap i would connect any new sender to it on the inside of the tank and then connect a matching gauge with the correct ohms? Thanks, Dan |

The flanged threaded piece on your tank the fuel gage is threaded to is called a bung. Yours is most likely soldered on to the tank. If the flange is the right size, that bung could be cut flush for a 5 screw type. It would be great to find a bung mount sending unit that would just screw on what you have, like the Joe posted but you would need the float to go with it.
I'm using aluminum "Gasser" style tanks in my Manta Ray. They did not come with the sending unit bungs so I need to weld them in. The new sending unit have a vertical float and will just thread on like like your gauge. The aluminum bung are about $20ea steel is cheaper. The only thing I don't care for on the new ones is the black plastic cap, like Joes brass one better.

My tank is 36 inches long and 6 inches deep. I was told it's a 12 gallon tank.
The bung is ~ 2 inches. Would that fit the cap show by Ferguson_Poole?

That cap worked. Sorry it took 2 years to reply!
My real reason for posting is to see if anyone knows where I can get a similar under seat tank. Took the boat on vacation and would have liked to have more time between fill ups. |

I just measured the area under the seat. The area i have to play with is:
39" Long x 14" Wide x 8.5" High The old tank is: 36 x 13 x 6 but that doesn't include top connections. |

Overtons carries a lot of poly tanks, and most made by Moeller. I put a Moeller on a pontoon boat a few years ago and was thrilled with it. Afaik they made just about every size tank known to man. Was also in a boat salvage yard near Clearwater, FL a few weeks ago and ran across a trailer that had tanks on tanks on tanks. I'd be shocked if you couldn't track down one that'd fit that space.

I'll have to look for a boat salvage yard near here. I don't think we have any though, just a few lakes around here.
I checked Moeller's website but they only have OEM on their site at the moment. The after market is under construction. The OEM didn't have any narrower than 18". It's your typical back-to-back seats. I'd think it'd be a popular size for a tank since they still make this kind of seat. |

I know this is a long shot, but I was hoping you had managed to change your fuel gauge for a dash reading. I am hoping you have kept your old fuel gauge (the one fitted on your portable gas tank) which I would be interested in buying if you want to sell it of course.
