TOPIC: short shat or long shaft

kinda on another topic but i wanted to bring it up new in front of everyone again... when i look for an outboard. i need to look for long shafts or short shafts the mfg brochure tells me my transom length is 20" so what do i need.????????

You need a long shaft for a 20" transom.

Just be aware if you start looking at relatively modern motors, some of them come in 25" shafts, which would be too long. It's not uncommon to see them called long shafts, although actually they should be called extra long shafts. Also, there is a very good thread on this site which explains exactly how to measure. Finally, although the shafts are typically listed as 15" (short) and 20" (long), they don't always measure out exactly that way, at least in my experience.

May I suggest that you/me/everyone call the various lengths, 15, 20 or 25 inch. - SAVES CONFUSION.

Thanks for posting that Mark--that's what I was thinking of when I added my 2 cents. And thank you, Scott "Chinewalker," for a crystal clear drawing that clears up a subject that is often very confusing.
