First off, welcome aboard to both of you!

I would say Definitely pull the carb and clean it out well at the very least, put a kit in it if you can find one! Almost all the motors that have been sitting up for a while will have gummed up (dried gas and residue) or sediment in them, many times plugging the small orifices and passageways. Starting fluid contains no lubricant like properly mixed two stroke oil/gas mixture, and is very hard on the motor IMHO.

I would also recommend replacing all the fuel lines, as they will break down from the inside first, and little rubber bits can break loose and work their way into the carb causing similar issues.

We've got a few folks here knowledgeable on those motors, hopefully someone will chime in here shortly with some first-hand assistance.

Being it will not start and stay running first thing to do is clean that carb. This was my Evinrude carb, looks clean on the outside. Not the inside. It was fully gunked up.

Someone hit on it, are you sure that the gas is of good quality. Your battery connections are they tight and free of corrosion, and is the battery OK, sounds like it is if it fires off like you've said.

barkersrock,

IF it was mine, I would change out the entire ignition system, put in a new waterpump impeller and rebuild the carbs BEFORE doing anything else.

The old GALE V4 are OVER-engineered and truly TOUGH. - FEW ever actually die unless some fools runs them on straight gas & burns them up, runs them out of the water or something equally stupid.
(I don't think that I've ever seen a BIGTWIN or old-school V4 "worn-out" from use, in 50+ years.)

yours, satx
