TOPIC: Controller cables help for Mercury 1959

Controller cables help for Mercury 1959 11 years 8 months ago #73373

This 1959 Mark came with a controller but not for this engine. Cable length ( not sure best way to measure) is about 10 feet.
I am not sure were to begin.
Do I need a controller and cables?

Do I need just cables?
Does anyone here have what I need?
Gotta love 7 degrees !!

Dave, looks what you have there are correct so far, need to see the business ends of the cables. Controller is correct and so are the ends on the motor. Don't get Mercs confused with omc's, the hookups and "action" are very different on the old models.

PS, You need to reset the date stamp on your camera :-)

I will get a pic. But ends are a broken plastic, rusted spring loaded twist deal. Much different than what is on engine.

The rusted spring loaded knobs are also correct,The broken plastic is not correct though :-) they connect to the motor case, the bracket that is bolted to the cowel. The actual lever that controls the speed and shift are moved by the action of the cable housing. I would suggest you post on the Merc thread, lots of help there and probably someone who can send you pictures of the setup. I only had one Merc and that was on my Herters, it also was a 1959 Mark 58AE. If I can find some pictures later I will post them for you.

As far as I can tell everything you have is correct. Snap the springy things in the mount that is bolted to the housing, the brass barrel(s) attach to the motor levers.

So you have the right control and the right cables. Not sure why you thought you did not. I'm also not sure if there is still a question you have or that it has been answered, this is the right place if you still have questions. The plastic sleeve could be cracked and still work fine although I would make it right with a new or good used. That end of the cable, the motor end, is the same today as it was then. The control end has changed, I make my own but new may still be available from variosu sources once you know what it is you need. Measure the JACKET length for correct cable sizing. At least alwasy use this length for consistancy as what "sticks out" will always be the same for any given cable application. That is regardless of length the control end and the motor end will always be the same for any given style.
I cannot recommend strongly enough to get a manual oldmercs.com has them or go on ebay and look for original Merc manuals not aftermarket ones.
There are many of us here to help in keeping the old Mercs and boats running.

So the engine side plastic can be replaced? These are broken and can not hold the spring loaded adapter. Dave

This helped a lot. I was looking at the cable install backwards. I did not understand how they attach.
