well,we all love our classic fiberglss boats,we love restoring them.

but even at my age(51) my body dosnt listen to me anymore, heck i have to take a half of a viagra pill just so i dont pee on my slippers in the morning.

im hoping that after surgery on my shoulder i can get back to working on at least one boat and catch up on my other projects that have been on hold.

im sure there are others of us out there like me(ok,maybe without the viagra).

im going to make a new years resolution to get all of my projects done this new year.

some of you are in the same boat as me (pun intended),i have no real area to work in the winter,so i have to wait until warmer weather,so i can work outside, between typhoons.

as our bodies get weaker our minds sometimes follow, but if we can work on our classics,we stay just a little bit younger,we feel the pride that comes with all that hard work, and in the process,we learn we can still hang in there.(pun intended again)

so in short we get alot out of our love of these beautiful classic boats, they keep us going, they make us proud to call each other friends and also family.

the younger folks coming into this hobby will learn the the easy way just how great the fiberglassic community is,because here they will find help, guidence, and most of all great friends, willing to help and guide them along the way.

so in closing, happy new year and may your family find the love for your old classic that you have for them, other wise hide them in your neighbors yard.

p.s. please forgive me for the viagra part of the post.

John, a happy and healthier new year to you, you're just a young pup making his mark in the glass world :-)
I'm 67, had a physical this morning with my regular php, had a cardio checkup two weeks ago with the cardiologist. As long as I tick when I walk in and tick when I walk out I consider myself in decent health.

Yesserrie, nothing like a Monday morning wake up by a doc sticking his finger where the sun don't shine. He said it's not the way he likes to start his week either :-)

Hope your Christmas went well.

What you doing to the shoulder John? Mine sounds like BB's rolling around on a frozen waffle. When will it be. I'm having another knee replacement on the 9th. Mine has broken pieces floating around to the back of the knee. I guess I put it off too long. Good luck to us all.

Had a colonoscopy last Thurs, my gall bladder removed today.I'm 50 so I can relate. This getting old sucks, but still beats the alternative. As for the boats,I need to get a motor back on the crestliner this spring, the trailer under the aristocraft redone.I also need to get back on my 65 ford truck project. Right now,I need to get some rest.jim

All of you guys out there take care of yourselves. As I have said to John a number of times, your health is worth more than any of your projects. I'm fortunate that at 57, I'm in reasonably good condition and that lack of time, money and a heated garage factors in to my lack of project progress more. So let's all stay healthy and get things done as they allow in the new year.

Re:to the old folks among us 11 years 9 months ago #72965

Yep it sucks getting old. I'll admit I'm only 52 but some days I fell a hell of a lot older!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't get the flu shot this year and it looks like I got the flu Sunday, feel like I got run over by an oceanliner. I would have said truck but wanted to stick with our boat theme! ;) As for projects, have to get the '67 80hp cleaned up and in it's '61 Housing then on the back on the clipper. Have to finish up the sliding compound miter cabinet. Arrange the garage so i can work with the Mahogany and get started on the Century. Also have to weld up a trailer hitch to the back of lawn tractor I got. I'm hoping I'll be able to move the clipper out of the shed and the century in with it, we'll see. If not no big deal it was only $100 and runs! Even has the 42" mulching deck. I'l post it and the miter station in the NBR section when the station is done.

John, good luck on your shoulder surgery. Your not older your just wiser! ;)

All, as Todd said, stay healthy. As long as we're working on our projects we're happy, some day the wives will figure that out!

john, was unaware of your shoulder problem. hope you will fully recover from the surgery and get back to what you enjoy doing. i've felt like crap the last 2 days (not dialysis related) but am much better now after heaving and taking a shower. going out in the garage and take measurements of the stern where my 9 gallon fuel tank is positioned. i have a carpenter who is going to build me a tank receptacle on rollers for sliding the tank in and out when re-fueling. all have a healthy new year. ron

Well, let's see...I seem to have the flu or something just as bad, ripped all the tendons in my index finger three weeks ago and on Monday, I took the end of my finger off with a jointer...same hand. At least I still have my drop-dead good looks!

You "kids" aren't going to get any sympathy from me! I'm 64 and I work on boats 5 or 6 days a week...all day. Keep in mind that anything worth doing is worth suffering to achieve and like Groucho said, "You're only as old as the woman you feel."

Gees, at 73 I feel like father time! I'm really doing pretty well. I've put my Dorsett undercover for the winter and just purchased a '79 GMC Caballero to work on in the meantime. It's a beauty, and I need professonal help with the engine...same with the Dorsett, but I love working on the rest of it!! Cheer up...there is life after the 60's!!

At 55 I am towards the middle of this pack, but can appreciate both sides. I hope you all have a good year and good luck with all of your surgeries, ect. Even though I own a woody ( no pun intended) I read with interest all of the rebuilds ect. that you all do. I have a '63 Merc 850 so I read with interest the Mercury page. It is good to see the interest from some of the " younguns" to our hobby and/or addictions. If not for them, these beauties would all disappear.
By the way John, how do you cut those "little blue pills" in half without crushing them? My shoes are getting pretty stained and I could use the help!! LOL.

I have figured out why we hurt when we get older. When we were young 12, 13, 16 etc. When the old guys said " There is a storm brewing, I can feel it in my bones" Or " The floor is getting further away every day, hard to kneel" Or "they sure are printing these papers smaller these days". And we just thought or said to them "Man, your a bunch of whiners, weenies" Well, this is gods way to make us understand. What goes around, comes around.

Just remember wood may bend a little but Fiberglas comes back into shape and lets not start comparing Johnson's again. Last time I was in the hospital and old friend of mine who went to nurse school after we both worked at Eljer was my nurse. This guy is about 6 foot and 180 lbs. he walked into the room and I said that I wanted a a young good looking voluptuous nurse and look what I got. We had a good laugh and when he got his break we talked for a while. We had been friends since about 1990.

I had my cataracts out at the tender age of 45 or even earlier. I had heart problems but it was all rhythm related. One knee replaced, another next Wednesday. Diverticulitis last year. I had pancreatitus in the past. Kidney's leak protein major back problems with disc and arthritis. And I feel old.

John-Gibson & ALL,

MY condolences to all you "old guys"! - I get up feeling fairly decent most mornings, despite my "zippers" & assorted "sewed up holes", that I aquired in 28years & during tours OCONUS in the Army.
(IF I could get "duckie" UP & out of her chair & walking again, I'd pleased clear down to the ground - fyi, she was playing tennis 2 hours before that !@#$%^! IDIOT SAWBONES paralyzed her, doing something that he wasn't supposed to do.)

BTW, we are both 66YY = duckie gets to be "the younger woman" for 46 DAYS each year, between our birthdays.

Re:to the old folks among us 11 years 9 months ago #73121

Several years ago I had an " old guy " ( probably in his 80's ) tell me gettin' old ain't for sissies, but is still better than the alternative. I guess we can all relate to that, at different levels. Also, they say the mind is the second thing to go, and I can't remember what the first one was.

What's age got to do with anything? I don't remember feeling any different 60 years ago than I do now (76). Just goes to prove that memory loss has it's compensations.

Just turned 71, and am rebuilding a house and farm in Alabama to live in and prepping our house in Florida to sell. Have had to learn that I can't do EVERTTING anymore and am learning to farm things out. Slimming down to one boat and slowly selling my outboard collection (making good progress there). Will get my yacht upholstery guy to finish the Seafair cabin next week!
Tes, John, we get slower as we get older, but out boats don't!
Have a great healthy 2013!

I'll be 50 in several weeks. I decided that my shoulders and knees were aching because I wasn't doing enough down hill skiing. So I started ski "therapy". It doesn't seem to be fixing the joint pain, but I do feel young and alive again. However, on a weird side note, in an attempt to meet women, I tried yoga, which does seem to help my knees. The yoga, that is, it did not help my love life any though. ;)

Something about playing Santa can make you feel younger too. Remember Give from the heart. This is important even more when you have not much to give. The young lady on the right could not get her daughters pic with Santa until here. Loud Ho Ho Ho's scared her. She was happy.

I guess it is just me, but I consider 50 early middle age. At 89 my grandfather was the oldest member and lead trombone player in the Minnesota over 60 band. My Grandma lived to 99. Until his death last year, my father, at 87, was convinced he was going to get back up on water skis "next summer". My other Grandfather reported to work daily until he died at 80 years old. My mom at 86 shows no signs of changing her life style, and is in fact getting back into the swing of things now after getting used to the loss of my dad. It's just a family thing I guess. We keep going 3/4 throttle ahead, cursing at the no wake zone, until we can't.

The other day some punk tried to offer me a senior discount. It seems that looks can not kill. For his sake, good thing I'm not superman!
