Have a 6hp limit on my lake. My wife can't start my 1990 evenrude. What makes and years of motors can be retrofitted with electric start?

Smallest horsepower I've ever seen with electric start is a 9.8 hp Merc or 9.9 hp Johnrude. Unless your wife has a physical limitation that prevents her from pull starting it, she may want to do something to strengthen her pull-power. A motor that is in proper tune ought to start with a maximum of three pulls using the proper starting procedures and shouldn't take a great deal of effort to do so...

You may also consider even a smaller outboard. My 2003 8 hp Honda is an easy start and I know you can get them in just a few HP. I had a 6 Johnson and it was very easy to start. This is the vid I made to sell it. It sold fast. A very industrious guy could make a starter work somehow. But it really did start easy. This outboard had sat for years as an spare in my basement.

Or, consider going completely electric. They make some fairly powerful electric outboards these days...

Thanks for the info. There is a strick six (6) HP limit on my lake; there are several older six HP - 2 strokes with electric start. Folk lore says there was a cut off year for the six HP class in-so-far as (retro fit) electric start capability. I'll be buying one and would like to narrow the search. Additionally, I'm interested in a "factory" retro fit, not a "McGiver" type job. any advise is more than I have to go on at this point.
Having my wife lift weights and/or using the existing motor is futile...
Merry Christmas!

Merc sells an inexpensive horsepower restriction kit which can convert an 8hp to a 6hp, only $20 for the carb restrictor plate, gaskets, and 6hp decals. If you could find an 8hp electric start motor, this would easily and legally convert it to 6hp so your could use it on your lake.

There used to be a 6hp kit available for the older 7.5/9.8 Merc Twins, but I can't recall the part # and they may now be NLA. Have seen a few listed on eBay in the past.

Get an old 8hp Chrysler electric start. Under modern ratiings it will be less than six hp.
