Hi everyone,

Got a question for you. My '59 Glass Craft had part of the transom fiberglass ripped off when I got it. The wood is exposed and has been for some time, so I know I'll be replacing it. The problem is I've had to put my restoration on hold for a while. My question is this: the boat is outside on the ground, Is there anything wrong with letting the exposed wood rot out? And can I help it along with some of that stump remover stuff (I think it's potassium nitrate)?

Thanks in advance,

Doug

Are there other parts that connect to it that might rot out too? Stringers, cored floor, etc? If it doesn't have anything attached I would think the rot just makes the future job easier.

I don't think I'd use any chemicals to enhance the rotting process Doug. Several thoughts came to mind;
A - You don't know how it's going to react with the fiberglass. It may not harm it, but unless someone can confirm this it's taking an unnecessary chance.
B - If you don't get all the chemical completely removed before reconstruction, it could cause issues down the road.

You could just wet the wood occasionally, keeping it moist and out of the sunshine would probably speed the process as much as anything. Also wondered if you have the hull on level ground, supported to prevent distortion? I know many of the boats rescued here have been subjected to this condition, but since you do plan on restoration eventually, maybe one of the gang with more experience can advise further on the best way to situate the hull.

Sorry to hear about the delay, hope all goes well for you sir.

Is the wood in its current shape good enough to make a template for the new one? The process is a lot easier if it is.

@ thetudor...no, some of it is already gone. But most of the fiberglass "sheathing" is still there, so I'm planing on making a cardboard template from that.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Well after careful consideration I have nothing to say other than I never heard of anybody on here wanting their boat's transom to rot. :lol: Maybe open it up and leave it get real wet.

Since the termites live in the ground you should bury the transom a few inches in the dirt where you have activity.
