TOPIC: Unusual Cleaning problem

Unusual Cleaning problem 12 years 2 weeks ago #69444

I have a pair of those old mermaid shaped white boat bumpers. They are pretty unusual and hard to find. The problem is,that they are stained with what must be some kind of mold or something. I have tried Bleache White whitewall cleaner, a Scotchbrite pad and CLR, soap and water, pressure washing, even toilet cleaner and nothing seems to do much. I realize this is a little off topic, but does anyone have any ideas what might work?
Thanks, Tom :(

I've found once that material gets old, stains tend to set in and not come out... Sounds like you've tried most things... The only other things I can think of are Oxi-Clean and Peroxide. Both use a different chemical method to whiten, and might just react with whatever you've got on them.

They aren't these ones, are they?

If they are, might just be easier to get new ones :)

Yes, those are the ones. I tried to post a picture, but didn't have any luck. They don't make those anymore, do they?
Maybe I could dye them with vinyl dye??

Manyguns,

TSP! = tri-sodium phosphate from the paint supply company - that stuff is H on stains AND it will take your skin off too. - use dishwashing gloves, a skotchbrite pad & elbow grease OR you could paint them with latex porch paint.

If they just won't clean up, try the spray can vinyl coating. I did some white vinyl ventilators with it and they are doing fine after three years out in the weather. Don't know how it would hold up to rubbing and bumping on a dock though. You might have to keep the ladies for shows. Are they filled with silicone?

Funny that I spotted this thread. I tried cleaning up some mold spotted bumpers last week. The material itself seems to be permanently stained. I tried everything - even muriatic acid!

It may sound crazy but try Acetone. Thats what I used on the trailer rollers after washing them with Dawn dish washing soap and let them dry.
