TOPIC: naming a boat, and interesting boat names

Re:naming a boat, and interesting boat names 12 years 1 month ago #68204

My first Jon-Boat with a 4.5 hp Merc. direct drive was called the "Flying Wedge". Because we ran into a couple of boats when I couldn't shut it down fast enough coming into the dock.

MAN!! A guy runs into a couple of small boats, and the whole world wants him banned from the river.

All ways forgiven when I had to pull one of them in during a storm.

Careful who you start to hate. Life has a way of coming back around on you.

I've had quite a few boats over the years but only a few that I named. My first was a 1955 Trojan Sea Breeze that belonged to my Uncle. After he passed I bought it from my Aunt and named it "Say Uncle".The second was a 1984 Cruisers Holiday I named "Just Ducky".The third is a 10.5' boat I built and named it "Sparrow" after Jack of course. One day I realized if you split the name in two it's Spar and Row, two nautical words.Well I thought it was kind of cool.Lastly is my project Manatee I named Mr. Mustard for it's very funky yellow/goldish color. It was either that or "Baby Poop"!
When I was a kid there was a boat in the marina that I thought had a very odd name. It was "Ela Reeb".It took me a while to figure out what it meant but keep in mind I was about nine at the time.

The "Middy Mae" is named for my wife's mother, Middy, and my mother, Mae. They go nicely together I think.

Have always liked the name, "Unsinkable II".

I spent a few years in the Bering Sea and one time we were delivering at St Paul Island and a guy had this little boat out Crab fishing and I thought the name was very appropriate for where he was and what he was doing ??

The only one I named was a 12 foot Century aluminum boat. I called it Century because the name was already there.

From my 1963 Century.
I orginally named "Glass of '63" because the topside is actually fiberglass but no one figured it out. Since I then changed it to "Class of '63" which is more appropriate anyway since it is a '63 model and it is also my high school grad year.

Here's another I thought was clever. Snapped this one in July up in Nova Scotia when the 40' yes...FORTY FEET...tide was out. Talk about easy bottom working.

I had been planning a name for my Evinrude Playmate of "Miss July" but it really seems to conflict with the gray, orange and black coloring. Perhaps Miss September would be better with the fall like colors and since that was the month I got the boat, September.
I'm thinking "Miss July" should really be Red White and Blue.

Thoughts?

My favorite boat name (wood boat) was "Varnishing Point" I saw at a show one time.

Our first sailboat was a SouthCoast 23 named "Piece of Ship" and it was. Our current sailboat is a Tartan 27 named "RobeyShipin". If and when I get the Crosby in the water it will be named "Cigar Boat".

My Aqua Ray is "Telstar"
The 59 Tomahawk Spirit (that I should sell) is "Grease"
The 59 Glastron Seaflite will be "Rave On!"
A sailboat I am looking at would be "White Mariah"

A friend of mine had a project boat that sat in his yard for years and I named it "Lichen" after what was growing on it.

I have a 1965 Glasspar G3 named Reggie, It got the name because I had 3 G3s, a yellow one,red & white, and the all red G3. in many early conversations I would keep refering to the all red one as "the redg3" and so named it Reggie.

In 1999 when I got my 32-foot Carver, I had a hole in one on a par 4 so I named it "Par Four". My 1961 Bristol is named "Over Fifty", because of it's age and how fast it will go.

Renaming your boat will bring you bad luck unless you do it right

I had a 32' sailboat we renamed to Dolce Vento (Italian for sweet wind) We paid for it with the change orders on a Carrabba's restaurant we built in SA TX...reason for the Italian name

We did a renaming Ceremony/party and all

Well now that the Clipper is 98% done we've decided to name her in honor of my son, Scott. Whenever he would call I would answer and say "Hey Bud", so we have decided to call her "Hey Bud" with some cool sea turtle graphics. He loved sea turtles. He was also a Graphics designer so we're having a graphic designer friend of my daughters design it. It's almost done and I'll post pics once it's finished. There's going to be one on each side back by the stern vice the transom since there's very little room back there.

I decided to name my Hydrodyne "P.T.'s Cruiser" I am a pastor and go by "Pastor Todd and P.T.", so I thought this would work well. Now all I need is a beefed up PT Cruiser to pull it! Someone also suggested that I name it "Visitation" so that if someone called into the office, the secretary could simply say, "sorry, he's not here, he's out on visitation."

Re:naming a boat, and interesting boat names 12 years 1 month ago #68566

wentworthto1,

GREAT PLAN. = your boat's name reminds me of a tavern in Waco, TX when my kid sister was at Baylor University, which advertized to: Tell your parents that you've been at THE LIBRARY.

THE LIBRARY advertized that they sold a 72 OUNCE draft beer, called THE BEARS BIG O.
(see things really are bigger in TX.)
