TOPIC: Help! Year of Johnson??

I'm trying in vain to find the year of the Johnson 50 Seahorse that came with our boat so I can get a manual for it but I'm having a heck of a time! If anyone here can help, I'd greatly appreciate it!!My guess from what I could decipher off of the web is that it is a 1979 Electric Start? Again, that's just a guess

I believe your guess is right, but the only 50 hp model they list for that year is the 50RL79C, is it possible the E is actually an R?

.. I second that opinion . Believe the motor is a 1979 year. In 80 the company went to a longer letter code id format.. Here is a book page also showing RL, but the last two numbers seem to be the YEAR.

I may be wrong on the Model number! The plate on the motor says SIA (?) Horsepower 55
So, my thinking that the Model 50EL79C SHOULD read 55EL79C. (The 0 is scratched off...I guessed because of the cover!!)

I thought it was a 50 because that's whats on the cover. I guess the owner lost the original one and replaced it with whatever fit?? Not sure....
So! I think what I have is a 1979 55 HP Electric Start Long Shaft! Now I need a manual!

Thanks guys!! I called marineengine.com and he helped me out, nice guy! I found the manual on Ebay (SeaRayMan13, great stuff, nice prices! It helps that I also have a 1992 270DA lol) I hope it comes today, that way the Captain has something to read while I get my legs tanned this weekend
