Hello, Mitch (13) and I put our father/son winter restoration project in the water for the first time last week. After a few tweeks it worked beautifully as we put many tanks of fuel through it over 9 days. Our 45hp Mercury Mark 58 with an 11 pitch prop pushed it through the water at just under 30mph. The Meteor even with 4 people in it worked well with no bad habits or problems. The rear pontoons lifted the rear of the boat to safety from rear approaching waves even on fast stops not allowing water even close to the transom. We had a ton of fun using this boat and meeting people out on the lake wondering what the heck it is !! The Meteor when used with common sense (no white cap waves) is a pleasant family boat with no bad habits. We look forward to using it allot over the summer...Brad Lake

Beautiful job! All those hours of work and dollars spent are really worth it on days like that!

I'll bet she turned some heads out there, too...

Hello the restoration took us about a year. The boat was completly striped down , we built a new interior and re did the gel coat. We improved on the ergonomics by moving the front seats back 6". We installed a balsa core floor with a 6" center beam front to back . The motor was completly stripped down , we re built the power head and the leg. Mitch wired the entire boat himself, and hooked up the air horns. Brad

John , thanks for your kind comments. I am very lucky, he is a smart kid with good people and craftsman skills. So far he still wants to hang out with his dad. I will happily take it as long as possible...Brad

That Balsa wood floor you have. Did you seal that up with resin? How well does it conform to the contours? I like the looks of it.

Hello, the balsa comes in 2' x 4' sheets of small 2" x3" blocks that has webbing on one side holding them together. They are very flexible and conform to the curves of the boats floor easily. I first sandblasted the floor for adhesion, then belt sanded it flat as possible. I next rolled a heavy coat of resin on the back side of the balsa and it's area of the floor, installed the balsa sheet and weighted it down with about 20 sand bags made from freezer bags filled with sand. Once the entire floor is installed in this mannor 2 layers of heavy mat was resined over the whole balsa floor to the center spar making a super strong but thin floor. ..Brad

I've been around quite a few Meteors over the years but this is the first time I've ever seen anyone use one like a real boat! Great pics!

Thanks for your comments JAG, these vintage boats are a ton of family fun. We have a 18' open bow boat and rarely use it now that we have 2 vintage boats in the water. The family always wants to take one of the fifties boats. The Meteor works very well on smoother water and gets heads turning every where it goes . To me using your restoration is an important part of the hobby... Brad

Re:56 Meteor hits the water 12 years 2 months ago #64791

yes brad, you are very lucky to have a kid like that,my wife and i couldnt have children,so i spoil my nephew,or i try to.
i put aside restoring one of my own boats to do one with and for my 17 year old nephew,it stayed in my garage all summer, and he only showed up twice, that was a real letdown,i could have had my devilray done already,i wasted all summer.

whats really great about you teaching him,is i see you do it right, and teach him more than just working on an old boat, but to respect the classics, including old farts like me,lol, lol.john

Hello delirious, my boat came out of the USA a few years ago. I saw the boat you were talking about in Ontario, I believe it went to the USA when it sold as the seller was overwhelmed with calls and it ended up on EBay.
One of my best friends lives in Kimbell by Owen Sound and I have been there a few times.. Small world ... Brad

Hello, we now have a number of weeks using the Meteor. The more we use it the more we like it's handling and ease of use. As a family we have put many tanks of fuel through this boat with nothing but good experiences. This boat has great manners when used on calm water, as i previously said it is not a boat to be used on white caps. I would highly recommend any collector to use their Meteors in the water as they work very well and that is what they were built for !! Happy Boating !!!!!Brad Lake

Personally I think it's awesome that you and the family are actually using the Meteor out on the water Brad, "good on ya" as they say! It's a beautiful job on the rebuild, IMO you've captured the true essence of what this is all about. A sincere thank you for the water test reports.
