1978 CELEBRITY DEEP V with 305CI Mercruiser? 12 years 4 months ago #62508

Friends,

does anyone know anything about CELEBRITY I/O boats of the late 70s?
(i've found an 18ft in "visibly nice" shape on a good trailer for 400.oo in "a wide place in the road" north of Waco, TX)

frankly, i know ZILCH about the boats/company & i see ZILCH in the fiberglassics library either.

There was a Celebrity Boat Co. in Benton, Illinois, founded by Fred Claxton about 1977. He had been with Mark Twain Marine Industries of West Frankfort, IL since about 1971 until forming Celebrity. In 1987 Claxton sold Celebrity to an investment group called Jupiter Industries of Chicago.

Not sure how long Celebrity remained in business.

Claxton's son Tim and daughter Laura started Crownline Boats in 1991 and in 1992 they located in the former Mark Twain Marine factory in West Frankfort.

I know nothing about the quality of Celebrity nor have I ever seen any of their literature.

The fit & finish and creature comforts of the original Celebrity bvoats was quite good. After they were sold, the styling & colors went Euro-style then out of this world terrible. That is what did them in.

I have no 1st hand experience with any of the boats after they have had 20 plus years to age. I do know the Mark Twains from the 70's all have rotten floors.

anyone know anything else? - a good quality color photograph of the interior/seats would be good, as if i buy it, i will want it to look original.

i have the feeling that the boat will follow me home next weekend.
(my PU is in the shop this week to fix fuel system.)
