TOPIC: core layup question

core layup question 12 years 4 months ago #62438

I finished filling the gaps and sanding the core, so now it's time to lay up the fiberglass. Should I wet out the core first or just do a dry layup? I am using stitched biaxial glass (no binders), so I will lay it with the matt face down on the core.

I believe you'll find it much better to wet the surface (core) with resin before laying down the biax! (When using biax "tape", I even rolled a layer of resin on the mat side of the tape before laying it down.) The chopped strand mat takes a good bit of resin to wet it out properly, I'm not sure you could get enough resin through to the mat laying it down dry? Wanna make sure you have a good roller and a chip brush (with the bristles trimmed down to 1/2 length) to make sure you get all the air bubbles pushed out too. HTH.

Thanks for the advice Mark. I will do that. I already have a fiberglass roller, but I'll buy a chip brush tomorrow. Getting excited about the finished project!
