I have a 1960 slickcraft with a 1958 Evinrude Starflite fat 50.
I think the starflite was setup for the pulley and cable steering system. I want to use the NON pulley/cable steering setup.
Is there an adapter to buy? If not, how do others convert to the newer steering setup? I'll post pics later (gotta go to the store).

Have to go on some assumptions here that the cable is the right length etc. Here are some pictures of the setup I converted from a pulley/cable. Although it on a Merc the principle is the same except your hookup will be horizontal vs my verticle. The attachment that goes on the motor is like a gimbal, the bolt goes through a round bearing shape (the white stud on the motor) that rotates and moves with the motor when turning and raising. The brass barrel thingy connected to that stud is a two piecer that connects the setup and allows the motor to move freely while still being connected to the stationary shaft. I believe I have an older swivel stud on a shelf somewhere if you are interested.
How to attach to your transom. excuse my transom, I'm still rebuilding.

I'm sure no to setups are the same but I hope this gives you some ideas. If you're missing parts there is probably someone here that can help you out.

With the motor tipped up the swivel allows for rotation while the steerins shaft is in one place.

a parts boat i bought was set up like this:





there's an adapter that bolted onto the end of the cable. i'll have to look at the parts a little more closely, but i'm not sure that your cable end is the same as the one i took off of that boat. i still have it sitting out in the garage, so i'll take a look tomorrow.

btw, this setup was hooked to an old johnson. should be just like what you'd need.

Thanks for the replies. The transom mount would be no problem, but how would i hook up the end of the cable? I guess i need to figure out how to make it attach to the bracket.

I am getting ready to change my homelite over too. Just curious if anyone has converted or built a tilt tube on the motor like newer engines? I am just not a huge fan of putting more holes in by boat....

So i got a complete cable/pulley steering system from a fellow member but i have a question about setting it up.

I know the cable should go something like this....

from steering hub to and around pulley, straight back to another pulley,around that pulley and out to pulley on motor, around that pulley and back to spring that keeps tension on cable.

My question is...has anyone seen a setup where the spring actually faces the front of the boat instead of out to the motor? It seems like it would be a lot of unnecessary running of the cable. I can't picture it without having 2 pulleys by each other at the front where cable would go to the steering hub.

I found all the original holes where the pulleys and springs where mounted from the factory. The pulleys all seem to line up good but the holes for the springs are directly under the rear pulleys and if the springs are mounted facing the motor like they should then the springs will rub on the body of the boat and get in the way of the pulley.

Can you all vision it? LOL. I'll try posting pics tomorrow to help show my dilemma. I don't want extra new holes, the originals are hidden pretty good.
