TOPIC: My $200 Boat

First off....I apologize that this is not really a classic but I just gotta brag a bit( I did recently pick up a nice 1961 Glasspar that I will start a new thread for.

I just had to show off my latest find….or should I say steal.

A whopping $200 got me this nice little 16.5’ 1990 package. Regi’s/Title …Boat Motor Trailer. Only issue is the 1990 Evinrude 90 VRO is in basically in 3 boxes along with the complete lower unit in the back of my truck. Said he was having some issues with hard starting a couple of years ago and took it to a Marine place who tore it completely down. The guy wasn’t sure what the diagnosis was(said something about a head gasket) but the cost to fix it was too high for the guy so he decided to just buy another newer 20' boat.

I saw it late last night on Craigs and called asking if it was missing a zero and he said no….just $200. I of course said how early in the morning can I be there. He said not until 8:30 when he finished driving the school bus(nice retired guy). A little over an hour drive to the middle of nowhere and I was there at 8:35am(didnt sleep much in anticipation)

There were no pictures so I expected to find a boat sitting uncovered in the woods full of leaves and moss etc but boy was I grinning when I drove in and saw it under shrink wrap. She’s a little sun faded etc but the floor is rock solid and the upholstery is very nice.

Motor was basically completely torn down in 3 boxes(incl labelled baggies full of bolts etc). Lower unit intact and only transom bracket/power T&T/Pan and colw left on the boat. Finally looked thru the parts and it appears that the motor was either over=heated or starved of oil injection as one of the pistons and the cyl are scored bad. So now I have a few hundred dollars of parts.....BUT a great boat and trailer....have a peak.
BTW...as you can see that always happens with Red gelcoat boats (and cars for that matter).... we have some fading. Any real quick hints on buffing/compound/waxing etc to get that oxidization off easily. I have wet sanded etc before but it took a while.

Heck yeah you did good! Very good for 2 bills.

I'd say that was one of the better deals I've seen. My Sea Lion Cruiser cost me 2 Thousand! and it just barely floats! LOL

Great find!!

The Meguires gel coat restoration kit seems to work pretty well and should clean that right up. Their final step wax isn't the greatest, go with whatever you like.

Try some Meguiars 'Ultimate' compound, or 3-M Finesse. Pricey, but well worth it.

Use a GRAY foam pad on a high speed buffer. She'll look like new!
