1959 Mercury MK58A 45 hp outboard motor. Color is white.
This is for the 1959 Playmaster project. I saw it and bought it. But know NOTHING about them. This one is a rope pull start. Short shaft. Has original controls. Last used 15 years ago. Turns over. One owner. Under $600. Opinionate away please!

Wonderful little motors. Get it and keep it in a high state of tune, keep the fuel clean and the fuel system up to snuff and it will work it's heart out for you for years and years.

What does high state of tune mean? Is there one manual that is best, I should look for? Thanks Dave

I believe Neil is talking about keeping the points clean and properly adjusted, spark plugs same, timing adjusted properly, etc... The Merc factory manual is generally thought to be the best source of info, from what I have learned from the Merc guru's. They pop up on eBay occasionally, or are available from (one source I know of);

IMHO you just can't beat the Original Equipment parts for quality Dave. When O.E. is no longer available, the Sierra brand (available at most marine dealers and many parts stores like NAPA, O'Reilly's, etc.)is generally an acceptable substitute. Just my two cents worth.......
