Can I use regular cheap spray paint as a guide-coat for sanding? Or will it react to the new gel-coat later?

White gel-coat and white filler are a real bear to see in the sun!!

You can, as long as you are removing it all. I use the .99 stuff on the bottom shelf at Wal-Mart. Works just fine.

Actually I wouldn't use regular spray paint. If you already hate sanding, then you wont want to use regular spray paint. Actual guide coat sands faster and easier and wont clog paper like spray paint will. Just my 2 cents.

I use a light 'dusting' of the paint.... I've never had clogging issues, really. I've used 'real' guide coat and didn't find much difference, but then again I haven't done it that much, either- And didn't have the patience to order the stuff ;)

If you don't want to buy Guide coat. Rustoleumn has a lacqure (this will not clog your paper) in a puff can that works great for about half the cost of Guide coat. However Guide coat has a different spray tip on there can which when used has more of a spatter spray which is much nicer to work with than the very very fine spatter that you will get from the cheaper source. So on a normal boat you may save three to six bucks if you use Rustoliumn. But you will like the Guide coat better.

Honestly I cant remember the brand name I used last, but the paint supply store I deal with carrys PPG stuff. Never tried the rustoleum, but depending on the size of your boat (mine was 14' amd I only used like 2 cans) guide coat goes a long way. Its up to you but I would spring the extra $3 just buy the guide coat and be done with it.

I would agree, for the amount needed, use the real stuff. Back in the day [working on cars] I was always taught to NOT cut corners in prep. ...just another two cents...

I really appreciate all of your responses! I'll call the paint store and see if they carry it.
