trying to clean up/test/reinstall the speedometer on my boat. i've read the section on how to test 'em, so i've got that covered. i just didn't know how to safely get the thing apart to clean it up. any hints? i didn't want to just pry the heck out of it and break it!

it looks to be clipped into place by these tabs (as noted by the arrow) but i wasn't sure.

also, any guildlines for picking a tube to run to the rear of the boat? apparently the PO thought it prudent to completely remove and dispose of the old stuff, so now i've got nothing to go on.

You can get a new rubber hose and pitot at any of the standard marine stores (West, Defencer, Jamestown, etc.)

i ask about the tubing because i've got 500+ ft of clear rubber tubing that would fit the bill here at work i can get for free. and i saved a pitot off of a parts boat. i didn't want to run with the clear rubber tubing if it wouldn't work though.

The clear should work fine as long as it is the right inside diameter to fit snugly. You might want to keep an eye on it in the future to make sure it stays pliable and doesn't crack. One advantage is you won't see it going to the pitot. The price is right, so I would go with it.

looks like i'll be going with the free tubing. thanks!

onto another issue: is there a way to get the gauge out of the housing without damaging it? if so, is it possible to restore the face of the gauge without moving heaven and earth? no point taking it apart if i can't get it to clean up, i suppose.

This is a topic I am also interested in.How does one going about restoring vintage gauges? Are there any people/companies that do this type of work?

I too am interested in anyone who can fix or sells parts to old speedometers. I have the original 1960 speedometer which cracked across the domed glass. I replaced the whole thing with another speedometer from another parts boat. But I would love to get the original back. So if anyone knows where to get this glass replaced I'd love to know. Thanx

I would go with Dale. He's done work for me, only lives a few miles away and has done work for award winning boats.

pushing out the meter from the housing has real risks. I have had success and failure doing it. Really, there is no reason to take it apart if the bezel isn't crazed or discolored. The face of the gauge is impossible to fix unless done by a pro. It is usually less expensive to find a NOS or nice used gauge than to have one restored by a pro.
