I'd imagine that dock setting in the ad just made for a nice way to frame up the trailer in center stage. Note the lack of bright color in the ad, with the exception of the trailer. Notice that's a tilting roller trailer. I would assume a boat would be winched on to the tilting section which then tips to set the boat onto the trailer itself. All without dunking the trailer.

No real parallels in modern boat trailers as boats have become much larger and heavier since the '50s.
