I've notice from the Mercury Mark 30 and Mark 40 I bought recently that they are dirty and greaser then my old Evinrudes and Johnsons. I think I might know why. My OMC's have an air silencer that covers the carburetor openings and the Mercs do not. I believe the air silencers keep the fuel with 2 stroke oil from spraying. This oil/fuel spray has been mixed with dust after 50 years of sitting in a barn or garage.

Merc did that on purpose,keeps everything from seizing up...Really, you don't think it's because of lack of carb maintenance,needle and seat comes to mind, or old gaskets that are seeping.Somehow I do not see gas spraying in the opposite direction of where it is being sucked into.I can eat off of the entire power plant on my 1966 1100ss that has never been torn down,clean as a whistle,even in the drip pan area...If there was a air filter like a omc, would that not get saturated with gas,clog up the air intake,cause it to run crappy without the proper air flow and eventually start to drip gas back into the pan area? Merc Towers are the bomb!!More hp to weight than any other outboard out there......Or are we trolling for lack of better things to do?

Oh my what's the fuss. I'm not highjacking a thread. I'm not out to offend anyone either. No big deal. I just had a wonderful day with all my Grandchildren here. I'm floating on cloud #9. One thing I have noticed on the outboard with the air inlet box's I've taken apart was that the inside were not oily greasy or even gassy.

I must have missed a lot of posts here. Came from that mercs deposit oil.....Then I saw a post of a pic that was deleted....something about a fat guy in spandex? As much as I don't want to see the pic, I'm curious. So, I've scrolled through the messages that are in this thread. One stood out. The pic of Robert Lorigans dog he posts with.... Look into his eyes, he seems more intelligent that what most of us type...me included. LOL
