TOPIC: OK,who made lapstrake bottoms on runabouts?

OK,who made lapstrake bottoms on runabouts? 12 years 8 months ago #54574

friends,

i've found a 16' UNIDENTIFIED runabout with a 1962 Homelite OB on a vintage trailer for sale near Austin. - supposedly a one-owner rig out of an estate of people, who died in the 1970s.

i have not found a makers name, hull number, serial number or anything else that might tell me who built it.
(part of the rig is disassembled & the trim/seats/etc are supposedly stored elsewhere.)

so, as a place to start researching: WHO made molded lapstrake bottoms on 1960-65 era FG runabouts that end at the point where the bottom joins the sides & where the "lapstrake" goes only 1/2 way up the stem?

I'm pretty sure we'll need pics. MFG copied their lapstrake from a Lyman hull. I know they used it for years. This is an older pic because it is easier to see than the black painted hull.

Lapstrake-like fiberglass boats were made by: MFG, StarCraft, Stuery, Sea Sprite, Sea Star, Thompson (in the late 1960s), and many others.

I don't understand your description. Pictures please.

thompsonboat & all,

i didn't make that very clear, did i?

ONLY the bottom portion of the hull, which is below the waterline, is "lapstraked"(the rest is smooth) & the "lapstraking" goes only 1/2-way up the runabout's stem.
(i've not seen this design before.)

will try to get pictures - the rig's in a dark area & will not be easy to photograph.

g3jim,

either that or a "knock off" of that idea.

POSSIBLE good news: the father of the current owner THINKS that the old registration papers on the rig is in their family's safety deposit box.
(fingers crossed, here.)
should know tomorrow or the day after, if he's correct.

YEP. like that.======> i'm GUESSING that it's either a Larson All-American 16 or a "knock off" of the same.- in that period, LOTS of little companies bought a new boat, made a mold from it & started making "cheap copies".
REDFISH was really good at "swiping" Glastron's new designs.= the Redfish Shark was a straight "knock off" that that year's (more expensive) Glastron!

once i get my hands on the hull's trim (and MAYBE the purchasing documents), that i'm promised is "stored away", i'll (i think) know more.

i'm guessing that, based on the son of the origional owner's recollection, that it's a 1962 model Larson, as the Homelite 55 OB & Dilly trailer are both '62s & Mr W________ says that his parents bought it all new at the same time.
(i haven't yet found a good/clear/color picture of a '62 Larson All-American.)

I have a 1960 Larson All-American I believe you will find the ID tag up inside onthe starboard side by the front seat I wish I could point it out to you. I found the ID tag on mine there. Up on the side wall near the controls. Is your steering on the starboard side like mine?
