I bought some Deck Step plates for the "Blue Flamingo". They had Black inserts and since she's all Blue and white I knew that was NOT going to work!!! I Googled and Ebayed till my fingers hurt and could not find any white inserts. Yesterday, being the GOOD HUSBAND That I am, I was cutting up some cabbage on my wifes WHITE Plastic cutting board that has a nice textured surfaced. VOILA' Why couldn't I fabricate some inserts for the Deck Plate Frames out of this stuff. Sooo... off to the wood shop and table saw I went and here's what I came up with. They work PERFECT!!!! Took about 30 minutes to make em. Oh...I did NOT use the wifes cutting board. I may be dumb but I ain't stupid!!!! I went to the Dollar Store and bought one for....You guessed it A DOLLAR. I could Make 3 pair of inserts out of one board. If you want white step plates this is an easy and effective method of fabricating them.

Nice! Just think- If you need to chop a cucumber when you're out there, you'll be all set :)

That is very similar to the material sold as 'starboard' for marine use. I had been thinking about using that material on my boat, too... I had been eying it at wal-mart, but they didn't have white- I'll have to check the dollar store.

The only 'problem' with the cutting boards, as opposed to the starboard material, is that it is not UV stabilized, and will degrade rather quickly in the sun. This probably won't be an issue for most of us- Since we don't leave our boats in the water long term.

There are often scrap lots of Starboard on E-Bay that are pretty cheap...

Like Andrew pointed out, the cheaper cutting boards are PVC and not UV resistant. You can paint them, unlike Starboard. They should last for years tho, I pulled out some PVC pilings that had been in the S.FL sun for 15 years and still good, just not strong enough for my needs. I think PVC has a land fill life of 4.5 million years...you should get your money's worth.

Excellent idea. Just realized who you are on the other forum site, duh! I'm definitely going to have keep these in mind for the Clipper since the originals are cracked really bad and will need to be replaced.
