Years ago,I found this top on an Aristo in the woods. The boat had been shot numerous times in an attempt to rid it of mosquitoes and was about to be crushed and buried so I rescued the top ,but the texture on the top was toast. So this was my solution(to put vinyl top material over the texture).Just thought I'd post this if anyone else had this problem.Turned out pretty good IMHO..

Looks GREAT!!

How did you adhere it to the top?? I'm thinking of a similar treatment for the dash on my truck...

Thanks guys, I used 3M contact adhesive spray. Andrew,I recovered a padded dash on a 66 ford pu a long time ago. It's not too bad cause you have those trim pieces and end caps on most of the edges to cover the vinyl, but those sharp turns on the corners are a little woolly. When I found the hardtop,it had one bullet hole. I guess the next hole would have been made by a track loader bucket tooth  !

That sounds and looks like a great idea. Did you use a spray mount adhesive or what. I've tried to do stuff like that with contact cement, but it is hard to keep wrinkles out as you press the vinyl down onto the surface.

I used the spray, started in the center and worked my way to the outside. The only problem I had was some slight shrinkage of the material over the edges of the recessed area in the center where it steps down, but I figure when I had of gotten to those areas, got it bonded and let it set up a while longer, then proceeded, I might not of had that issue.

One of the things I like about the vinyl verses the original texture is the vinyl has a soft touch to it.

Probably transfers less heat to the underside area too, I would imagine?

I dont know if its still around, but :) w a y back in high school auto colision (1968). I sprayed on simulated vinyl tops.
you laid down the base coat , then the tape to make the seams, then the texture coat, which was put on with a spatter gun tip on the paint gun.

the spatter tip did give the texture of a real vinyl top

High School Auto Collision? You mean they had classes on that? We had to do that on our own. Auto repair was another story.

Great job on the top, BTW.

another cool way to create texture is to buy spray-on truck bed liner in the rattle cans. with pratice it looks very vinyl. tremclad offers a textured spray paint also, if a finer texture is desired.
