TOPIC: wiring a horn

The horn I have had many missing wires. I have no clue where they go or what have you. I'll include pics of both sides of the horn and the case that went over it. I assume there must have been a trumpet on top of the case (if anyone has a spare trumpet email This email address is being protected from spambots. This is somewhat confusing. Are those terminals on top of the case for a plug? I only ask because that's what they look like, and would not be unusual for a horn.
Horns are pretty simple. Complete the circuit, HONK, interrupt the circuit, nothing. I test stuff like this with an old 12V battery I keep in the shop (actually, at last count, 3 of them!), and with test leads with little battery clips on them. Usually horns are wired to a two position button that connects the circuit when pushed. Not sure what else to suggest. Most of the diagrams I can find include a relay and fuse. Frank

On the second pic, there are two screws with no wires going to them. what and where does this go? Also, on the case there was a spacer between the two post with a hole in the bottom.

The screw(s) with no wires are probably the "tuning adjustment" screws. Many of the older mechanical horns like this had and adjustment to make a minor "tweak" in the pitch of the horn. (Seems like tightening made it higher, loosening made it lower?)
The bracket and hole in the top look more like a flag staff mount? Don't think there would have been a trumpet mounted up there, but I'm just guessing, not sure at all.  |

Very cool horn.Mark is correct that the screws with the lock nuts are to fine tune the sound.Same as auto horns. My guess for the bracket on top is that it may have been a mount for a spotlight.Test it as Frank describe and wire it in using the wiring diagram he also suppled and you should be good to go.

Yeah, the horns work. Very loud and obnoxious. I guess I'll have to try to find a spotlight to mount to the top of the casing. Any suggestions?

i'm curious why a horn is shaped like a bow light?
the terminal looking top? are there screws or anything on the underside to connect power to? to anyone who has maybe restored horns...my Tahiti had a horn mounted under the deck...I tried hooking to battery to check operability, no go... wondering i stripped back the old wire to new.. do horns go bad after sitting for year? |

check out auxilary motorbike lights for it....the`ll bolt right up to that bad boy lol only around 40-50 bucks n chrome

I know of a guy who had/has that exact horn on his Falls Flyer. It mounted about 5" behind the matching bow light. I've never seen another one until today. I've been hunting.
The horns inside look a lot like the ones Lionel used in post war diesel locomotives. Are they wired in series or parallel? 6 or 12 volt? I think his horn had a telescoping radio antenna on the top. Horns don't go bad, but the point contacts can corrode. I have cleaned up the electrodes inside horns and got them working again. |

No terminals underneath the casing to connect things to. Just has those terminal things on the top with a bushing that goes between the two. Didn't know I had a semi rare piece. Heck, I was going to junk it an put a new horn in, but since I was shown how to get the horns working, I'll keep it and mount a small spotlight/tractor light to the top.

kewpie,i have restored or customized alot of "air" horns,and have been doing so for a long time,your electric horn is the 1st one i have ever seen that looks like that,very nice,john
