Do the different colors of the kiekhaefer medallions mean different things? I have a 1960 Merc 400, the medallion is total faded out. I'm not going for pure restoration, but I would like to know.
NY marine has these to choose from

different years and color combos had different colors. The late 50's had a lot of variety color wise. By the early 60's they used silver and white, then all white. Not sure if yours should be white or silver. I have the Merc catalog from that year, I'll look at the pictures and se if I can tell.

Hi,
I believe that a white one is correct. If you wish, you can use this link to our "Cowlings" website page, and scroll down about 70% to view a nice used 1960 Merc 400 front cowl (the pictures can be clicked-on to enlarge them): www.fergusonpoolemarine.com/cowlings.html

It looks like the white background is the way to go.

I thought white was the correct way, then I saw one of the members motors and it was silver. Any clues to which is correct?

Not to hyjack your thread but today I picked some extra merc parts from a fella in southern WI and he has a motor for sale, looks just like your picture only not as shiney. Cheap, he wants to get rid of it. Mail me if anyone needs an address.
I will also post on the merc threads.

Hope this helps -- I also have a '60 400 and the silver back medallion was not faded but cracked so I ordered (from NY Marine) the silver back and it matched perfectly.
