Hey Ken, are we talking purchase price, total restore/rebuild cost, or what? (Not sure I want my wife to see that last number! LOL)

I bought my Glastron for $25, I think I have about 2K in materiels for boat, motor, trailer. Fiberglass, plywood, paint, epoxy, fg mat, resin, engine harness, trailer bearings, wheels, paint, impeller, battery, etc., etc., etc. and I'm not done yet! So... I'm going for the 2000 to 2500 range on this one. Oh, I didn't count the 1000 hours of pure enjoyment working on it.

:o

Ok, we'll add some higher ranges for the high rollers...

So well said, Ken.

Being a novice at the restoration/rebuilding hobby, I really didn't have a good idea on how much the supplies were going to add up to in the end. (End, where's the end???) I'm on the "pay as you go" plan, which slows the project sometimes but makes it easier to keep a good conscience about the whole thing in today's crazy economy. Not buying supplies one week when funds are tight is a whole different ball game from missing a payment to the bank!

I find the "labor of love" is therapeutic, and cruising in a Glassic you brought back from the bone yard is priceless. Besides, look at all the great people we get to meet here.

Mark, I too am a firm believer in pay-as-you-go, at least for toys. I did the same thing when building my hot rod. It waited on cash each step along the way. Last year the price of my boat went up considerably as I installed hydraulic steering, and it will go up considerably next year as I add new radial trailer tires and (I hope) aluminum wheels to the Power Cat trailer. My problem is one toy too many I guess. I need new tires for the hot rod, and they're gonna be over a grand, so not sure when that's gonna happen. Plus I just bought an expensive insurance policy - a 7500W generator. It never ends!

Maybe we need a Govt. Bailout. They give billions for less.

Do we include money spent to buy "non project" boats? You know, the ones that didn't need work. We just used them & may or may not still have them.

Then there may be specialty tools or perhaps the pole shed to keep them in.

Mark,

The $25 boat adds up to that over the past year, so on the average, thats only about $170/month. I also paid as I went. It just adds up slowly.
I did start with a 5 gallon pail of fiberglass as I knew I was going to need alot. I figured there would be some left over and there was, only about 3/4 gallon.

Does any one REALLY want to add up all those receipts? I'd hate to know what the actual total is... Especially if you figure in man hours ;)

I know the Century I restored, woodie, was well into 5 figures but I never kept the records, took on a second job to pay for that one.
The Herters I'm working on is pay as you go also. I just throw all the receipts in a folder. If I kept a running total I would have torched it with some of the paint and thinners. Who can count labor. The ROI is the thumbs up and wow factor that you get at the launch site and on the water.
