TOPIC: Saying Hello and asking for help (of course)

Saying Hello and asking for help (of course) 13 years 2 weeks ago #44718

Just found you all, and wanted to say Hi to the Forum. My son in law isn't too handy, but he wants to learn, and learn with his son, so we recently found a boat in the junkyard we both liked, and for the outrageous (yea, right) sum of $200 we walked away with this old Evinrude, powered by a Buick nailhead, and included the drive. Almost totally complete it just needs a lot of TLC and going thru.

The big question... can anyone tell me what model and about what year this boat is, and more info since I can't seem to find anything about it yet on the web?

I won't be a one post wonder here, gonna need all the help I can get, and I figure Rick will be around too asking questions and sharing our excitement. THanks, Buck

Welcome aboard. Sounds like a nice find. Did you pick it up yet? If the motor and outdrive is OK I don't think you overpaid at all.

It's to be delivered Monday, and I've not had a chance to run numbers on the engine or power it up and try to turn it over. I've restored cars for years, so I have an idea of how to bring the engine and drive back, it's just seeing what we have. Thanks for the "didn't overpay" I was thinking along the same lines as you. It's VERY complete engine wise, down to the original spark arrestor/air filter.

As soon as we get it there and I can find out more, I'll pass it on,and keep everyone up with how we're progressing, and of course ask for help

Buck nice find....
I can honestly say I have never seen a closed bow tri-hull
The motor itself sound retro.

Buck, the fourth boat I owned was an Evinrude tri. Had the Buick engine. That engine would not quit it was bullet proof and with the small carb still had lots of snot. Parts are still available on EBay and craigs. I have a new fuel pump for it never used but out of the box if you are in need. OMC outdrive depending on the model are getting harder to find part but they are out there on cheap junkers. The engine was a gogetter, broke the main driveshaft on the model 800 drive from the torque.

I cant believe it has a nailhead! Sweet! Those are my favorite motors. I would like to build a rat rod really bad and a nailhead would be thr center piece. Do you know what one it is? CI?

Thanks guys, good to see the response and activity here. John, the name ends up either being scary or funny. I made it way back about 97 on AOL to ridicule all the pervs that were haunting chat rooms at that time. I was the world's most inept perv, had people rolling when I'd try to pick the wimmen up :)

Few hours now and we should have the boat at the house, try to clean some of the interior mess out, and then what I'm wondering about, the numbers on the engine and I want to pull the plugs and let the pistons soak for a few days before I try to turn it over with no compression.

And I know it's not boats, but some car porn for tey167... here're some cars I've built, more at the same name on Photobucket, let's just hope I can get Rick and Eli wanting to go the same quality and attention to detail route. I know they're excited, and Eli, @ just over 3 is already calling it "MY BOAT!"

Great car read! Know the feeling of having to burn the tires in the garage in the Winter!! Heck Ill fire up the weedwacker for the 2 stroke oil smell. Winter Sucks.

I am sure it will be a real beauty in due time. Buick nailhead for a solid foundation, Rick always said he wanted a boat. Now he's got it. And by the end of this project either he will love it or hate it. (Maybe a little bit of both :) lol) and he better take the attention to detail route, but knowing how he and I have much in common being his first toy he will want to throw it together as quick and carefree as possible and end up tearing it back down religiously. He said he will have to be the one to tear down the nailhead, I can't wait. Once he overhauls a v8 I think he will never look back. Good luck. Hope to be in around Halloween to check the progress.

LOVE THOSE SMOKIN' MOPARS!
Great job, if you put that skill into the boat you will have a trophy winner right out of the chute.

Yep, concur with 63 Sabre. I love that GTX with the 440 Six Pak.
