neil, very nice boat. you have a lot to work with there, and i sure love those tall white mercs. way to go. all i found here in mn last weekend was a free glasspar with a rotted transom, and an old glastron tri-hull, with the normal rotten wood. did not take a pic of the glastron, here is some of the glasspar. frog

Neil,
Again I'm so happy for you I'm beside myself. ;) She's a good looking rig and that Merc looks very clean. How does it look inside? She's going to be a great project and I know she'll look phenominal once your done with her.

Thanks Heather and Bob.
I am right now just taking the interior out. Catagorizing all the screws and fasteners. Taking lots of pics.
Turns out that the cats and racoons liked to use the boat over the last 32 years. Smells like, well, not so good. Face mask and rubber gloves kinda work.
Frog
Glad to see you out beatin' the brush. Is the Glasspar a saver? It looks like a little tundra removal is in order.

Here are my three favorite pictures so far.
The first is the gentleman that I bought the boat from. He said that every Sunday they would take the boat to the river. He said he never went swimming or skiing. He would wear his boots, Levi's and white straw hat. He just loved to drive the boat. His wife would make fried chicken and potato salad and they would seem to always be the most popular boat. They are a wonderful couple. He had a look about him that leaned toward sadness about his baby leaving the place.
I was the first one to pull the boat out of the shed after 32 years.

Thanks Mark
I just couldn't wait on this one. Moved it to the top of the list.
Just cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning. I am going to do the interior first. Hull second and then that white powerplant.
But I will get some shots of just the motor here soon
The trailer is a Mastercraft. I think it is uglier than my sixth grade teacher, but that is what it came on.

Neil, that is truly a beautiful boat! The way the side trim turns down on the side and blends with the wood sets it off. jim

she reminds me of a hi liner. Real nice get but please please please be very careful around anything to do with the racoons. Protect your lungs and eyes very well. I can not caution enough on that.
Clean her up we want to see her boating on the water!!!! Nice package indeed.

Thanks for all of the kind words about the old girl.
He said that when he ordered the boat, he wanted to be able to run the shifter and throttle with his right hand and watch the family over his right shoulder. Way cool. All interesting history.
When I got the boat home, I lifted both fuel tanks out of the boat. Both were brim full. I would suspect the octane rating is about the same as todays gas by now! :P It is a good thing that the tanks were full, otherwise they would have had condensation from so many years of sitting and would have rusted the bottoms out. It also has the manual bilge pump. I will post some pics of the tanks and the pump later. The top was stored up in the rafters. Dusty and dirty but not rotted or mice damage.
My wife and I feel fortunate enough to be able to take advantage of a once in a lifetime find like this one. I know I may have said it before, but I thought it was worth repeating. Alot of times in our lives we have things that come along and for some reason were are not able to do them. And then the inevitable regret is there. Well this is not a "million dollar barn find" my any means, but it is sure a nice little piece for us. I can't wait to open up that Merc and share with you guys. I will put it in the Mercury forum when I get there.
Sorry about the long rambling post.

Neil it is a wonderful boat and I just love to read about it through your eyes. I can't see it myself and your description is paramount in our understanding how much it means to you, and us that this example has been saved from the mice, animals and insects. I'd love to see that hand bilge pump. Also that brass fire extinguisher should really show off nice after clean up. It looks like it is still holding a charge. I'd have it checked out and be sure it is safe. A period working unit like that could help set it apart. You just keep rambling. I'm listening.

Hear, hear, I'm with Robert. Ramble all you want it's your thread and you should be proud of your new found joy. As I've said before it's a great find and going to be a fine project to work on. There's just something about Mahogany with many coats of beautiful varnish glistening in the sun, reflecting off the water, that gets me every time. That of course will be your boat too. Congratulations again my friend.

Thank you everyone.
Inside the back hatch I found the numbers 16 1729.
16 foot and the 1729th one made? It is also on the insides of the interior panels.
A little research in the library here says it is a 1959 Tollycraft Roustabout. 15" transom. Transom width is 30 3/4" Those are the measurements exactly. The trailer is a Mastercraft. The dust is Washington topsoil and the "fragrance" is Corral #5. :(

Neil,
That wouldn't be the Glass Boat show at Harrison would it? This is their first annual show. I hope it's well attended.

Retirement is always an option :) When I bought my parts boat the 18 gallon aluminum tank was full, heck of a time getting it over the sides. The gas mix is going in my lawnmowers a little at a time mixed with some good stuff.
Looking forward to your progress, thanks for sharing. That hand pump is a classic by itself. The first boat my dad bought in the late 40's had that same pump and my brother and I would take turns pumping the bilge just to keep the old scow from sinking while we were underway. Had an old model A Ford engine with the foot clutch, just grind it in gear an go.

Yes it is the Harrison show.
I am not taking a boat. Just taking a motor to a friend.
Should be a hoot. Are you attending?

I think society is set up backwards. We should be working 2 days a week and taking the other 5 off. :(
The human being is supposed to be the smartest creatures on this planet and we set it up this way??
Ah well, the majority of the earth's surface is covered by water and we own boats so at least we got that right LOL.

Neil,
You Bet!

The show is coming at a really opportune time. I hope to see and learn a lot. Especially now that I'm considering getting my 'feet wet'.

If you see someone that looks like Santa gazing longingly at the fin boats, that would be me.

I got a little more cleaning done over the weekend. It is smelling alot better now. This is hard on old knees. I finally threw an old dog blanket down and that was much better.
My wife took this shot. Bless her heart!
Cleaned panels. The dark mark is fronm the steering cable rubbing for years.

Neil, Lowes has these knee pads that work great. A little pricey at around $10, but well worth it for your knees.

Good idea with the pad.
The edges on all of the stringers are square and sharp.
Its coming along.
I also found a 1958 nickle, so I did not pay as much as I thought I did! ;)

I told the wife that I wanted to get pics of everything we do on the boat. She took me a little too serious I think. ;)
I am doing the interior first. Then the outside. Motor last.
I am going to use this and present it as an unrestored original.
There will be no modifications whatsoever. They are only original once. I will have to do the bottom paint and the sides to protect from water intrusion though.
The chrome has some pitting, it has some dock rash, and it is not show quality by any means. But it is a cool old boat.
