I have the means to get it and the place to store it, but I am waiting on two others.
I should just pick it up and pass it on to another glasshead here.

That boat would be great but with two outboards. One in the middle ain't gonna push her too well...

Re:Power cat (pics added) 13 years 1 month ago #42857

that cav plate is even lower than mine. has to be even or above the top of the tunnel or you'll get lower unit drag which means lower speeds. ron...i just noticed a notch cut out in the transom just like mine. why...because of cavitation problems i bet. need that center sponson on a tunnel hull to run i motor effectively... i say.

depending on the speed goal twin merc 500's would be cool. twin 800's you would get some nice speed.
Very cool boat for sure.

I want one. Maybe next year, I'll get one. I think those are the coolest boats I've seen.

Re:Power cat (pics added) 13 years 1 month ago #43256

He sent me the same pictures. Emailed him that I wanted to look at it this weekend but never heard back. I imagine he's out playing while I'm home with my laptop. (or someone knowledgeable, unlike me, has already bought it!)

The transom looks odd to me. I zoomed in and the center looks like wood not fiberglass. I think I can also see screw heads and a bead of silicon caulk too. Definitely not stock. Something to be concerned about?

New to the forum, haven't introduced myself yet, but the subject caught my eye.

Good eye Jon, and welcome aboard. It does appear to me too that someone has done some "patching" and improper bedding on the transom. She's a grand old lady and deserves a full out restoration, including new transom, etc... IMHO.

I suspect you are right though, someone has probably already snatched her up. Hope she went to a good home. Anybody heard from Danny L lately??? B)

Welcome Jon...The wood you speak of that's actually in the tunnel is a add on.Maybe to keep the back spray to a minimum by forcing more water into the working area of the drive.Engine is not set up correctly. The hull is designed for twins but will work with one IF set up properly. The "hard" water behind each hull gives the prop more to bite, not as random as it is between the tunnels. The transom has been replaced and probably has to be done again. If you notice the area around the splash well you will see the big gaps where it should be flush. That is a easy repair as access is now all open. The formed seats were only made for one or two years.Check out powercatboat.com for history and model info. They are very stable boats at any speed. Most people on here will suggest twin Mercs from 65hp up to 80 for that rig.The boats are not great in waves over a foot and a half.Small/light and not a V hull.So if you live near a river or small lake this would be great.Has fins, rare, tunnel hull, designed for twins, will go like the wind and is a absolute blast to cruise in,they do not bank while turning so you will feel like your on rails and at speed it will push you up against the gunwale. The drawback is it will take awhile to get your boat in and out at the launch site as you will get stopped and asked a lot of questions.Hopefully the seller took off for the weekend and it's still there to be had, good luck!!!!JT

cool runnings Mr 88

Re:Power cat (pics added) 13 years 1 month ago #43293

Thanks JT.

The cuttouts in the glass above the transom were a concern of mine too. Looked at as many pictures as I could find to see just what it should really look like there.

I researched powercatboat.com quite a bit after I saw the original ad. The 14 with a single engine was offered as a more affordable boat. I hope they did their homework about putting the motor in the tunnel. One of their owners boats had this add-on. Ever seen anything like that? Powercat eventually went to all tri-hulls...go figure.

Waves? Lake Coeur d'Alene's not small, but I figure I'll be just a fair weather sailor any way!

Check out G.Larsons /CT. 14c in the Power Cats in use today. Not sure how that step worked for him, but if you join there yahoo site he is always on there and there members including the son of the man responsible for these can give you more info on engine set up.They went to two tunnels mainly because of the cost vs twin engines. Also at that time the big Towers were just being introduced so 2 50's vs a 100 hp made the choice easier.I run a 66 15T with a shorty 66 1100ss pushing her.Currently pursuing a 140 or 150 Stacker to put a bigger smile on my face.

cool runnings Mr 88

Re:Power cat (pics added) 13 years 1 month ago #43326

Yeah, saw that too. Did not pick up on the narrative that the previous owner had installed it. I was looking more for the transom to top deck details at the time.

140 or 150 Stacker huh? Well you know what they say,
"The only thing better than horsepower is MORE horsepower!"

If I were to end up with this cat, it would still take all of my persuasion skills to get my wife into it with only an antique Merc 55. Besides at this point I'm still thinking of a leisurely "putt-putt". I've been down the need for speed road before. I have a hard time putting the brakes on if you know what I mean!

Missing them Big Smiles!

Re:Power cat (pics added) 13 years 3 weeks ago #44076

14c .. This one has some issues....
This model year was the only one with the molded
fiberglass seats... While they make it unique.. they
were the most uncomfortable things we ever made even
with cushions.. and we discontiued them the following
year.

Not sure what that is they have done to the rear facing
of the transom above the tunnel.. I suspect that the
transom was starting to go and showing separation at the
bottom edges so they bonded that piece of wood over it
to try to salvage some use of the boat.

This boat is best limited to speeds under 65mph and anything
over 50mph should be done only under ideal condtions.. so
I would limit your engine choices to twin 60's or less..

The boat will never perform as good with a single engine as
it will with twins.. There have been many modifications
tried with limited results.. If you want to run a single
be prepared to deal with the performance problems.

Having said all this, for $350.00 .. if I was in the area the
boat is, I would not hesitate to buy it.
