TOPIC: Question about sound dampening

Question about sound dampening 13 years 1 month ago #42658

My new 1967 Gulfstream with the mercruiser 160 seems a bit loud. It looks like there was some kind of sound insulation adhered to the engine cover at some point in its life. Does anyone have an idea about what would be a good product to stick in there to help reduce the sound a little bit so maybe someone could sit in the rear seats without going deaf?

There are probably lot's of different companies out there basically selling the same thing. I know that DynaMat, Second Skin, and FatMat are all popular sound deadening material for hot rodders/car restorers. You may be able to use them in boats as well.

The old Rude and Johnsons just had foam rubber glued to the inside of the hood, a favorite building material for mice.

Hotrod or upholstery shops should be able to fix you up. Make sure whatever you get can take the heat in the engine compartment.

When I was restoring my Camaro I wanted something under the carpet that didnt absorb water Deadend sound and was Heat resistant .They sell Hot Rodder stuff for that but its pricey .I went to Home depot and they have Wrap for Furnace Duct work .Its Self Adhesive foam with a heavy foil backing on it . Pretty Durable .It worked on the Camaro and I didnt have to worry about my Headers getting the floor to hot and harming the carpet .It was a 1/4 of the price of the official stuff .
