Before you get too far, you need two things. A compression tester, and a spark tester. Factory manuals are helpful as well.
Also marineengine.com has a great forum for engine help.
What kind of engine, year, HP, etc.?

Thanks Jim, my plans are to learn as much as a can about these motors. I was told it was a '63 but I am going to verify, because I think the boat it a '64(doesn't mean motor could not be a '63)

I will get a spark and compression tester today.

It is a 75HP Johnson and will I was trying to fire it up yesterday it turns over and then after a couple seconds there is a loud pop...almost a backfire sound.

Make sure to post engine questions in the Jego forum (if it is a Johnson or Evinrude). Some of the guys know the older models pretty well.
I am stuck in the 70's/80's.
