Don't force it, use a hammer.

of course I am, little joke.
I have had the same problem, they seem to be pressed on and I had little success getting it off without dinging it up.
I ended up buying a better one on ebay.

On a VW bus Speedo I used a very small and modified screwdriver to uncrimp the crome ring and clean out the inside .. and turn it back to 0 I was jsut curious how it worked but I was able to make it look ok doing that any damage to the ring was on the portion that mounts in the dash so if I were to use it you couldnt see it but it was a good way to clean the glass and make it all clean and sweet looking.
