I started buffing out the new paint on my Merc the other day. Looks nice.... I need to put the new decals on next. Anyway... I got to thinking if it's OK to put them on after buffing. And do I now need to use a wax remover or something like that before I apply the decals? Just wondering........

if the compound you used is wax and silicone free you should be OK to apply. Get a spray bottle with a mix of alcohol and water (some like water and a very lite mix of soap) and wet the surface. You should also have a small squeegee to squeeze out the water out from under the decal. Do not do it in the direct sun and take your time (the water mix allows you to do that).
Good Luck

The two compounds I used are pictured below. There is nothing on the containers telling me if they have any wax or silicone in them. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me might know. I emailed both companies about it, no response yet.

Well, I heard back from Meguiars. Here's what they said. No mention of any wax. Hmmm...Wish it was more definitive.

"Dear Ed,
That polishing compound does not have any silicone in it and it is body shop safe. Thank you for your inquiry.
From:

Customer Care/MG-Meguiars/3M/US "

No word from Turtle Wax. I managed to find their MSDS on the red compound I used. It only lists (White oil) Whatever that is..... :(

Soooo, I guess I'll go ahead and put my decals on.

First off, think if ya only did a "cut and buff", you are good to go. All shown, just abrasives in a paste. That said, the last thing I ever have done, similar, decals, etc, is do a "wipe", with PPG "DX330", "Acryli-Clean, Grease and Wax remover". Now this is NOT sold at Home Depot, ya need a find a auto body shop, ask there for the supplier of the PPG. Body shops know it well, and will not harm cured paint. Do NOT use acetone, or MEK. PPG made it for a reason, and hope this helps ya. Good looking Merc too, but never seen one I DIDN"T like! Robby..(PS, check first on the paint, a spot not seen, to make sure)
