after skips horns are done i have to finish the windshield visor, with paint and vinyl, then paint the motor and install some stainless sheeting ,i dont want the cranks crackng anything.
then we will put the motor on it and hook it up,i gotta hurry the best i can ,the hammondsport show is the 16th of this month,im glad im going to have ed here.i worked on glassing the visor while the top of skips horns were drying.i scratched the top while tring to put the screws in,i hate slotted screws.john

here is the only pic i have left of the visor on the boat. next comes the sanding.
by the way for the new folks here is what the dash looks like now.

1st of all I have to say of all the runabouts that show up on these pages that Sunray is my absolute favorite. Looking at the 3rd photo of the visor the gel coat looks pretty bad and was wondering if you ground it all off or just used a filler? If I remember correctly you recommend a resin jelly. What were the steps you used? Thanks.

hi mel,and thank you that a very high complement.
mel i used a filler primer, then sanded, cleaned with rubbing alcohol, then glassed it,i will sand it smooth then reglass it,then sand again, then paint on the top side, and vinyl to the under side,i usually do use resin jelly ,just not this time.
this is kind of an experiment for me,just to see if it works without the cracking,i will let you know,if it does crack again i will glass cloth over it,john

"way back when" is just an absolute stunning runabout and is going to "wow" the crowd at "Hammondsport". CustomCraft will be a name much talked about after the showing at the Wine Country Classics acbs show. could be up to 8 customcrafts there with an overall count of 12 glass boats. might be the highest representation of glass at an acbs show. ron

Boy Gibby, you're doing great. Is that motor in motion, or is it the photographer? LOL!

frank,im not sure, lol,i think my camera is screwing up.
thank you frank ,bob and mel,i just painted it with the matching teal ,tommorrow im going to attempt to mask it off and add white to it,i dont know if it will recrack or not,im hoping not.
i almost threw it away it was so bad,now im glad i kept it.i bought a very cheap touch up gun for it at harbor freight,it seems ok,just some minor adjusting.john by the way those things you see are my roof rafters reflecting off the paint.

thanks ron, thanks bob,im about to paint the white on the visor, then im probably going to be hated, but the motor will match the boat in paint colors, but i figured it would not look right on a boat without ANY black on it,and the paint is so bad,at least it was saved ,and not destroyed.getting ready to go out to the garage now,lol

john, since the boats been customized theres no reason why the merc shouldn't match it. i think its going to look terrific. remember Simon's stingray and merc?

Re:still working on the sunray 13 years 2 months ago #36532

looks real sharp john....simon was from the netherlands and worked for a yacht company. he popped up here in 2005. i developed a good friendship with him, but his last post was in 2008 i think. he told me a number of times "don't be surprised one day if you hear a knock on your door...and its simon" i had told him he could stay at my place in the poconos for as long as he wanted, and that the money he saved on lodging he could ship his stingray to lake wally. CRAP HIS VID WON'T POST.

Looks very nice John. I like that you didn't just paint that area all white but masked off the teal between the white raised molded portion. BTW I assume the teal color is an automotive paint. What is the application? That color might be a candidate for our Pacific Mariner Stiletto. You really do nice work!!!
