Hi,
Bought a 74 Mariner sailboat By O'Day. Getting it ready to sail and hope the launch in a couple weeks. Call my insurance agent (Allstate) and he said I had to have a marine survey or a statement of seaworthyness from a dealer because it is over 25 yrs old.
Survey is $500, which I thought was very high since I have no lights or electronics.
Would like to do the right thing in the event I had a mishap and do not care about collision just need to have liability.
My question is this:
How many of you have on the water insurance for older boats? Run into this rule before?
See any way around this rule?
It is covered partly under my homeowners when home and auto insurance covers it while on the road. I want to protect the $200 k boats I will be near.(you never know)
Oh and the 500$ survey is only good for 5 years....
I will be calling some other insurance companies also.
thanks,
Paul in NH

I'm with Hagerty also. Just had to send pic. I think it was under 150 for all kinds of stuff.

I have mine through American Family for my '59 Thompson. They go by the market value of the boat and motor if something happens. If you want to go by an appraised value you will need to go with a specialty insurance company.

Hagerty denied me because I have a tunnel hull boat. They said it was made for racing, and they don't insure race boats. I said my boat has a hard time going 45 mph. They didn't care.

I have Progressive for less than 100 bucks/year.

Years ago, Hagerty also denied me insurance for my hot rod. I'm not sure how they do business, or if they just have a vendetta against me.

We have ours through Hagerty, however I am hearing good things about Grundy.

We had to have a survey on the GarWood and I think the Sea Skiff (we had them anyways). But we did not need one for the Shark, SeaMac, AristoCraft or Duracraft. Maybe because their value isn't that high.

They asked me what I'd put the replacement value of my Owens and my trailer and that's what they charged. Break down on the water, flip it on the road and everything in between. I think it was 112.00 for the year. I know La. is the king for auto insurance but don't know how it compares for boats.

I ran into the exact same thing with Allstate, but I was able to get it done by my local Evinrude dealer, and I could brag about it with him. Was only $40 though. Since I was there I lanched and the kids and I had lunch on the lake.
